Cop Refuses 911 Call over F-Bomb - Man Almost Dies

"In Lincoln Park, Michigan, a 17-year-old called 911 when her father (recovering at home from brain surgery) had a seizure.

Her first call didn't go through, so the panicked girl hung up and tried again. While the phone was still ringing, the girl said "what the fuck."

Apparently 911 calls are recorded even while the phone is ringing, so the police officer heard her say it. When the officer answered the call, he was only interested in the fact that the girl said "fuck" and wouldn't help the girl. Instead, he swears at her and hangs up.

After the girl places several more calls to 911 trying to explain that her father was about to die, the officer finally called the fire department with a fabricated version of what happened.

Eventually, the girl gets arrested and jailed by the police for a crime that isn't on the books." [BoingBoing]

I'm just happy that the police chief was open to admit wrong doing.

Also (not that I condone what the office did) couldnt that girl immediately state the problem first if even profanely rather than call out the operator??

Like, "My f*cking dad is 'on the floor, dying, having a heart attack, a seizure, any description that warrants an ambulance'."

Xaxsays...

My first reaction is, "That piece of shit deserves to die." I don't know about that, but he deserves to be fired and probably serve jail time for putting a life in danger.

holy moly!
thats steve wilson from WTTV here in tampa's fox affiliate.
him and his partner got canned due to exposing monsanto!
that guy is like a rabid dog with a bone....i love him!(not in the gay way)
as for the cop..meh..bad case of douchebaggery.
most likely thought it was a crank caller due to his exstensive career patrolling the "hard" streets of Ledesma.
he's sgt macfarland..private eye..tough guy!
except when confronted with naughty words, then he just becomes..DOUCEHBAG man!
the girl on the other hand,
weeeeell...im torn here.
she is 17,which means she is hormonally challenged.
but lets look at this:
your loved one is on the floor having a seizure only days after brain surgery.
you call 911....by the fourth ring and no pick up,
you say "what the fuck"..only to have an officer answer and ask you if your ready to be polite, and not to use "potty" language.
i think all of us would have a "WTF" moment.
heightened emotional state.
panic and hysteria.
and the very service you are calling for help in this state,
wont help you until you agree to stop the "naughty" language.
language you used before anybody picked up.
seewhatimsaying?
if you blurt out "what the fuck" when you think the phone is ringing, and nobody is listening..god forbid the people you are reaching out to for help.
only to have a cop chastise you for a word you said in what you thought was to yourself.
refuse to help..then hang up??
well,i gotta say...
im calling ya back..
why??
CUZ I NEED HELP!
and you may find that my litany of "potty words" may have grown in size when i do.
cop=epic fail
girl=understandable potty mouth

i'm guessing panic had something to do with her opening line. i'm also guessing the cop's reaction is due to his enormously inflated sense of self-importance. he's no help to anyone while he's in the police force. fire the fucker.

Kevlarsays...

Terrible story, and I'm glad it ended (somewhat) well, but does anyone else see the inherent hilarity in a cop who spends all day listening to the sounds of people dying and yet can't handle more than one "fuck" per phone call?

Because that just crosses a line.

Ryjkyjsays...

Fuck that fucking cocksucker. He should absolutely be fired. Being a dick is one thing but 6 whole minutes of delay... that's insane.

I love watching the cameraman follow him and ask him questions though. I could watch a whole solid hour of that.

It makes me want to start writing him obscene letters.

blankfistsays...

A two week suspension with no pay? If anyone of us did something comparable in our non-statist job, we'd be fired and possibly blacklisted from our industry. Why do these douchebags get away with being plain terrible?

*fear the authoritarian statist!

This is one of the most horrific videos I've seen. There are lots of videos where people get hurt and it all ends badly, but they're usually victims of their own stupidity or just dumb luck. In this case, it's the absolute worst kind of vindictiveness.

When someone dials 911 it's their last resort. They have no-one left to turn to, no-one else can help them. They should be able to place their trust entirely in the person on the other end of the phone. They'll be in a stressful situation by default, if they weren't then they wouldn't be phoning 911. The cop is the worst kind of person there is, and how on earth he's kept his job is beyond me. When someone dials that number it's when they needed him the most, and he couldn't cope.

To all those who are complaining that she shouldn't have argued with him, as far as she knew she was watching her father die. Can you really expect her to act rationally? She made a wrong descision perhaps, but she was just trying to get an ambulance. She thought she could get him to back down by threatening to sue him, but that was only her desperation. All he had to do at the begining of the call was say "What's wrong, how can I help?" and he failed. Big time.

Sickening.

Cop's an asshole. Kid's a moron.

My interpretation: cop's lucky he's not looking at a negligent homicide charge*. Kid is watching her father die in front of her.

I think she's entitled to freak the fuck out. Ever actually rung for an ambulance? I have on 2 occasions and I can tell you, it's generally not a time when you're calm and rational and on both occasions, I got through and got good help very quickly, which helps. Kudos to the chief for not laying on the B.S. - he's vague when asked about punishment but that's to be expected.

* I don't know if that charge exists, but that didn't stop them before.

There's a couple Robert McFarlands in the Lincoln Park area that I couldn't narrow down and I don't want to accidentally post the wrong dude's address so I suggest you just try the department itself and address it to the good Sarge.

My sentiment also. Just state the situation so the cop realize he has to call an ambulance (no excuses) and then you can resort to threat of suing or whatever.

The clash of egos can wait, not your father.

paul4dirtsays...

im really glad in our country the media (normally...see below*) care more about privacy. i think its really fucked up how they name ,blame and shame this officer on tv (and internet).

even though his behaviour was crazy and fucked up, he should only be suspended / fired / put in jail or whatever according to the rules/laws, not by public humiliation by the media for him and his family by giving everyone in the world his full name.

edit: wow, didn't even read the 'want to write obscene letters' and the 'There's a couple Robert McFarlands in the Lincoln Park area that I couldn't narrow down' comments. this is exactly what i'm talking about. and i'm sure others aren't bothered about posting the wrong guy's adress, i'm sure he's already getting some 'obscene letters', which is terrible.

* a couple days ago a major dutch paper posted a picture on their frontpage which they thought was the man responsible for the killing of 7 people on queensday. they got the picture on a dutch networking site (hyves), and guess what... it was NOT the killer. And guess what, the guy got threatened, even though the killer himself had died a couple days earlier (this was also in the news). Terrible. Even people riding the same car as the killer (a black suzuki swift) have been harassed...

Luckily, normally our (offline/old) media are a bit more careful and don't post full names of suspects or even convicted criminals. However, some people still seems to want to personally take revenge and don't care about the consequences for democracy, or even worse, if they get the wrong man, for an innocent citizen and his family..

Blah.

JAPRsays...

Holy shit, he got suspended WITHOUT PAY? That's not something you see too often with police officers. Usually they just get to take a vacation with pay while they think about what they did wrong.

gtjwkqsays...

I haven't seen a single post in defense of the cop, so that's what I'll do LOL

It's a stressful job, he gets a lot of prank calls. A young girl calls in cursing. He snapped.

Can't the girl have some humility and stop cursing if she needs help that bad? Can't she FOCUS on doing what is necessary for getting help for her dad instead of MAKING VERBAL THREATS to the person she needs help from and complaining about the service?

Cops are supposed to protect and serve, but hey, guess what, they are also human beings. You shouldn't expect to get service if you treat people badly.

P.S.: I'm not a christian and there are no cops in my family.

You reeeally don't have to specify whether you're gay or not. Not that it really matters, and I understand that I'm nit-picking at something, but I doubt anyone will read this comment and think, "Wow, what a faggot!". Just a minor pet-peeve of mine, I suppose.

Shit, if I had been a douche like that when I was an MMO game master, I could have been written up -- and that's just a fucking game. Of course, I knew plenty of people that were douchebag GMs. Give a group of people a lick of power and chances are someone will abuse it.

Does anyone know what the turn over rate is for police officers?

LordOderussays...

Well since the officer in this case is so offended by the word "fuck", I'm going to see how many times I can work it into this rant. Please forgive me for any lack of grammar or punctuation this rant may suffer.

ahem...

If my father was lying on the floor having a seizure because he just had FUCKING brain surgery, I think I would be a bit freaked out. If I then called 911 and no one answered, I would be pretty FUCKING stressed out and pissed off the second time I called. I could definitely see myself muttering "What the FUCK?" to myself while waiting for someone to answer the FUCKING phone at 911. When the officer finally does pick up, and decides to chastise the girl instead of doing his FUCKING job and helping her, he crossed the FUCKING line. The fact that this dumb FUCKING cop, then hung up on her for getting confrontational is insane. She is a highly stressful situation, which the cop should assume since she called FUCKING 911! Do you honestly expect her to act rationally? The fact that she got so FUCKING desperate to help her father that she ran to the police station shows that she was in a pretty panicked state. To then arrest her on a FUCKING made up FUCKING charge is FUCKING insane and makes me want to FUCKING stab someone.

I mean...FUCK.

what is that 14? not bad.

If someone personally calls you and swears, not at you, but swears. You have every right to hang up.

But when your answering 911 calls.. you should EXPECT to hear some swearing, and hanging up is absolutely NOT part of your job. Even if it is a foul mouthed teenager.

kageninsays...

I used to work with a woman who was at one time a 911 dispatcher. One of the smartest, fastest minds I know.

She'd be beside herself with anger and rage at the way this 911 operator did his job. He absolutely should be fired. He clearly lacks the required empathy to perform his job in an appropriate fashion.
