Chicago Cop Beats Up Female Bartender (Violent clip)

The incident happened at Jesse's Short Stop Inn on Feb. 19 while the officer was off-duty. The bar is located in the 5400 block of West Belmont Avenue.

The videotape shows a large man shoving a much smaller woman to the floor and repeatedly punching her. The attack happened when the bartender refused to serve the man any more alcohol, according to the victim's attorney.

The bartender, identified as Karolina, said the incident began when she refused to serve him alcohol.

"When he got drunk -- that's my responsibility, to cut people off," she said. "So, I did what I was supposed to do. When he was actually beating me up, he said that, 'Nobody will tell me what to do!'"

The Cook County state's attorney's office has charged 38-year-old Anthony Abbate with aggravated battery. He was arrested at his home on Chicago's northwest side Tuesday night.

Chicago police officials said Abbate has been stripped of his police powers and the department will seek to fire him. His attorney has refused to comment on the case.

Later on the night of the attack, someone approached the bartender saying he was there on behalf of Abbate and offered her money not to report the incident, according to court records. Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said the investigation was ongoing into whether charges, such as witness intimidation, should be added.

As part of Abbate's bond conditions, the judge ordered he not have any contact with the 25-year-old bartender, the owners of the bar or the bar itself, and that he not possess a firearm while his case is pending.

Abbate is a 12-year-police veteran. A preliminary hearing was set for March 27 in Indictment Court.
