On December 24, 1988, Mega Man 2 became Capcom's greatest hit, popularizing the boy with a blaster in a generation already saturated with platformers. Its more forgiving difficulty, improved graphics, and stellar soundtrack made it a massive success in North America, where it released on the NES a year later, after its initial launch on the Famicom in Japan. The game has sold more than 1.5 million copies, and has since been regarded as not only one of the best in the series, but one of the greatest video games of all time."
