Bush Appoints Himself Dictator

The "National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive," with the dual designation of NSPD-51, and
HSPD-20, as a Homeland Security Presidential Directive gives Bush total dictatorial powers--he just has to declare a national emergency. When declared it gives him the power to control all Federal, State, Local, Territorial and tribal governments as well as private sector organizations. It would also stop elections from being held.

It's not like there is any shortage of gall in the present administration.

Frankly, I think shit like this is inevitable; the slippery slope is about to get really steep.

In other news, Paris Hilt..........

sheesh guys, the tinfoil hats won't help you if you keep licking toads

are these powers *new*?? truly? have you checked? nope, guess you haven't...

the first of these types of acts was in 1947, by the truman administration (national security act)

they can all be generalized as 'continuity of operations' plans... and most presidential administrations since eisenhower have updated and revised them -- carter, reagan, h.w. bush, clinton, and now g.w. bush

why do they need to update and/or revise the plans??

well, things change in a technological, organizational, as well as global political context, e.g. cold war (beginning and end), fema, the internet, 9-11, terrorism, homeland security, and rogue states

many of you seem determined to drum up this ballyhoo and shit your knickers over the supposed implications... but at least check the background and know the facts -- THIS IS NOTHING NEW

I guess it depends what the changes are isn't it? I do think it's odd to block an election in these times. If it's really a dire situation I understand the need to mobilize, I think we all do. If you blur the line between when you're really at war and when you release your powers yeah it's fair to worry. I think the biggest problems with the bills passed is that the congress doesn't get to comment on the emergency situation for months.

Really I don't know why you guys are so scared that you want the government in your business claiming to protect you. USA is a country full of firearms for any citizen. If these terrorists really DID get over there and fight I have a feeling they wouldn't get very far .

Could this be a preparation of this administration to retain their power? If there is a cataclysmic event, presidential election would be postponed indefinitely and Bush/Cheney would remain in office granting themselves a plethora of increased powers. All it would take is another event.... One say, like that of Pearl Harbor or 9/11.

Everyone needs to have a heightened sense of their surrounding to protect their country and increase the likelyhood of preventing such an event from occurring.
