@Quboid given that some people seemed to be waiting for it (hence my quote) it would appear they were aware of who was about to sit down etc. And the people with cups ALWAYS set them down before sitting. So I'm guessing some people might have been told "oh, try the comfy seat, but don't spill anything on it" or something of the sort.
