Nothing wrong with this, but was this someone's college credit work?

Although he had some interesting insights he lost me when he said, "human identity is not determined by the society but by the individual, which BY DEFINITION is problematic. What definition, whose definition. Is it listed in the big book of identity definitions. Using phrases like "by definition", "obviously", "it goes without saying", is a cop out and leaves a huge hole in the middle of his thesis.
