Bizkit the Sleep Walking Dog

Wow!!!! I too thought it was going to be the typical thing our lab likes to do...but DAMN! That's crazy! Our dog has recently started sleeping with his paws against the wall, and has been pawing the wall in his sleep as if he's pawing the door asking to go out, or come in. But is sound asleep on his side.

Still, that's nothing compared to this crazy video!

There are people who have certain genes switched off so that they aren't paralyzed in their sleep like most of us are so they act out their dreams, sometimes violently.

Makes me think this dog has the same condition.

this is REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD).

muscle tone is usually suppressed/switched off during the vivid dreams of REM sleep, but in RBD it's not, so the dreams are acted out. it seems to be caused by a problem in the lower brainstem, but the condition is not well understood. development of RBD predicts the later development of other neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's, even years later.

people with RBD act out their dreams and may injure themselves or their bedmates in doing so. safety is a real concern. the condition usually improves with a sedative medication called clonazepam, which probably works by minimizing REM sleep so the person doesn't dream as much.

RBD has been described in dogs and in fact was depicted in disney movies before the scientific description was made.

here's a nice article about REM sleep, RBD and some associated sleep disorders.
