I thought he'd be more humble to be honest, that was the impression I got from all his self-deprecation in the reviews.
Talking about how his slightest positive comment "moves units" seemed so out of place.
Don't get me wrong, I still love his reviews. It's just the "never meet your idols if you don't want to be disappointed"-thing I guess.

Painkiller sales tripled? What's 3 times fuck all? It is a fun game, but it doesn't mean much if 4 million people watch it and instead of 1 sale, they get 3. I always thought his material worked better if you've played the games, but to be honest I didn't think he realised this or perhaps wanted to realise this. Fair dues for seeing it as it is (or at least how I see it, which is the most important thing ).

Rugil, it's the interviewer who mentioned "moving units" (2:12). I thought he did come across as reasonably humble (e.g. the novelty of him saying something positive).

Well, I can see how it would have moved sales - considering he pretty much NEVER gives a positive review, that was a big statement for him. Almost every developer out there throws free games to the Penny-Arcade guys knowing how much of an influence they have on the industry. If he really does get 4 million views per video, then there would be no doubt that his reviews are influential.

4 million views is about the same as a Saturday night NBA game. How much do companies spend on advertising for one of those? With a videogame review your demographic is already much more focused - the people you want to sell games to are the ones who click to watch. This is much more focused than the viewers of a basketball game. Really, there shouldn't be any doubt that his reviews boost sales dramatically.

I'm not questioning whether it's true or not, I'm just surprised he didn't insult the people who would buy a game just because he likes it in an attempt to deflect the underlying flattery.

Ok, so
a) I thought that was awesome
&
b) I never find out about these things until after the fact... the ACMI is bloody walking distance from my work

I don't know where you get that from. He was asked by the interviewer directly; it's not as if he brought that up himself to boast.

well I think he's just as fucking cool as I originally thought he'd be in real life. And that's pretty fucking cool. semi-nerd : semi-cool.
