Awaken - 4K Trailer: Epic timelapse movie

dpreview: 'Awaken' trailer released, features never-before-possible time-lapse shots.

Filmmaker Tom Lowe is breaking new ground with his upcoming film Awaken. Not only does it look to be a visual treat on par with the likes of BBC's Planet Earth, the film also features never-before-possible time-lapse sequences made possible by new types of camera equipment Lowe helped to invent.

Awaken is a feature documentary—created by Lowe in collaboration with Dubai Film—that explores "humanity's relationship with technology and the natural world."

As such, it's going to be full of spectacular natural scenes, gorgeous slow motion, and other inspirational bits of cinematography you won't want to miss. It's the time-lapse sequences, however, that really blow our minds. Featured briefly in the trailer above, Lowe was able to shoot time-lapse and astrophotography time-lapse from a moving helicopter.

These shots were made possible by gimbal technology that kept the camera stable in flight, and it's hardly the only innovation Lowe is packing into Awaken.

"Shot over a 5-year period in more than 30 countries, the film pioneers new time-lapse, time-dilation, underwater, and aerial cinematography techniques to give audiences new eyes with which to see our world," boasts the Awaken website. "AWAKEN is a celebration of the spirit of life, an exploration of the Earth, and an ode to the Cosmos."
