I was expecting a tuba player giving a kid a big old close-range BLAT. But this was cuter. It's also good to keep in mind that 6 years olds are made out of rubber.

It's actually a sousaphone, designed by and named after John Philip Sousa.

I think the tuba player meant to just stop the kid from running through the formation, but miscalculated the angle that he stuck his leg out and caused the kid to trip rather than just force him to stop running.

It's a fairly big no-no to break ranks of any formation -- this in particular looked like a miltary marching band. I know when I was in Drum & Bugle Corps we nearly came to blows on more than one occasion for people doing this.
