That's just amazingly happy.

I've got a young'un on the way (due in Oct, for those that care). I hope I never have to experience this level of joy, but I'm glad that there are doctors and scientists that are able to make miracles happen, especially for young children.

It's still kind of sad. A cochlear implant still sounds like satan speaking to you. They can only pick certain spots on the cochlea to stimulate, so the implant only allows you to hear certain frequencies. Better than nothing, but far from normal hearing. Either way, HOORAY SCIENCE!

Very happy video that could warrant a controversy tag.

Seems there's a movement against these devices in the deaf community, some regard these devices as akin to eugenics or ethnic cleansing of deaf people and their culture. At least thats what I heard on signzone on BBC late one night.

I've heard rumblings of similar things, but wrote it all off as completely retarded.

it can be helped a lot by upgrading the firmware to have "virtual" stimulation points.

nice article about it in Wired a while back.

Thank Science indeed.

Lets just hope they don't say 'thank god' after all is said and done.
A good example: 'Thank God he lived after that surgery'.
Makes we want to smack someone upside the head when I hear that shit.

That's because the rumblers evidently are stupid. Making deaf people hear again is not a bad thing, making people smarter is not a bad thing, improving our bodies with technology is not a bad thing. Yay, future! Boo, hippies.

I think rgroom1 is exaggerating. They're not perfect, but they're good enough to understand people even when you can't see them speak (e.g. a telephone conversation).

Good acting by the baby, and clever video editing.

As soon as the video finished, the baby made some rude gestures at the doctor and his mother indicating his dissatisfaction at not receiving the more expensive model.

Hmm kid is gonna have a mute button for the world and soon will learn the excuse, "Sorry, can't hear you, cochlear implant not working." awesome...

FUNNY! Others and I joke that with my hearing aid too! I just turn it off or lower its volume!

it kind of seems the nerve stimulation was too strong at the first moment, when his head twists it is almost non-voluntary looking

I wonder if that's how Limbaugh hears everyone now that he has one.
