Tannerite is a nitrate-based explosive that takes high-force impact to detonate. Hitting it with a hammer won't set it off. Shooting it with a rifle will.

It was designed to be used for rifle ranges so you could see a little something to let you know you hit the target (and don't have to walk a hundred yards to see the sheet of paper). The manufacturer recommends that you don't use more than 0.5 lbs at once, but well, safe is never fun, is it?
