4 Rules to Make Star Wars Great Again

Dear J. J. Abrams, how to make Star Wars great again....

Nice video although I can't agree with all of it's points. I think a fully functioning and believable universe can and should have both shiny and new as well as old and used. His example of shiny was Queen Amidala's ship from episode one, it's the vessel of a head of state, of course it's going to be shiny, just like we drive our President around in a limo, not a beat up AMC Gremlin.
Likewise I think Star Wars can be both on the frontier as well as in the centers of civilization and government, it would get boring if you just limited yourself to dusty plains and hives of scum and villainy.
The other two I agree with though, I think it was a mistake to introduce midichlorians and of course Han shot first, that just goes without saying.

I tend to favor Plinkett on this subject. When you have compelling characters and a well-told, focused story, you can break all four of these rules and still have a great movie.

I do like rule 4, though.

I love the extended universe but I bet you if the "stay away from shiny things" rule applied, it'd be a better, more authentic Star Wars feeling. That's just an unfounded opinion based on a sentimental feeling, but if we could reinvent the world an infinite number of times at will, I'd place my bets that this vision creates the best outcome.

Some of the worst parts of the prequels were in "the frontier", with Anakin making crap out of dirty old parts. The reason the prequels sucked wasn't because of details of the setting or because there wasn't enough arms getting cut off or something. It's because the story was poorly written and the acting was horrible (mostly due to script/direction problems).

A lot of the great scenes from the first trilogy (ep.4-5-6) were shot outside on exterior locations. (Hoth, Tatooine, Endor..) Still better than CG and green screens if you ask me.

There was a reason they went with 4,5,6 first . . .

I don't mind that 1,2,3 had civilization in them. Overall that's good for the story, since it shows how decayed and frontier like the galaxy has gotten. But as others have said, I don't think these rules would have saved 1,2,3. A good story and better direction would have. The origin of Darth Vader alone could have been soooo much more epic.
