Chomsky: Trump is Dangerous, Zizek is Wrong

ghark says...

Exactly what I was thinking. I think Chomsky missed a couple of vital points too; Clinton cheated her way to the primary. There's plenty of evidence for that, including:
http://observer.com/2016/07/wikileaks-proves-primary-was-rigged-dnc-undermined-democracy/

So in essence, regardless of whether she was running against the worst possible human being in the world (I guess we came pretty close heh heh) she should never have been allowed to even run, let alone win.

Also, he discusses how her policies are overall better, however seems to forget there is always a discrepancy between what a politician says, and what they do.

I always enjoy hearing Chomsky but that interviewer was annoyingly douchie (agenda) imo.

Yea, it really does look horrifying. As far as them oogling the wedding dress, maybe it's a throwback to the FF7 save Aeris part? Pretty cringey with voice acting either way.

John Oliver - Opioids

ghark says...

Can't watch the vid because it's blocked for me, so I apologise if anything I mention is covered by the vid.

There are very few cases where opiates are a good idea for chronic pain (as yours is). The research (which the new CDC guidelines on pain management incorporate) shows there is very little evidence opiates are beneficial for managing chronic pain. The only situations where it should be considered for chronic use are basically end of life (including cancer and palliative). The downsides are just huge, and outweigh the benefits for just about every other situation.

The reasons? Apart from the obvious stuff like tolerance, addiction, death and the rest of the massive list of side effects, there is also a lesser known problem called hyperalgesia. Opioid induced hyperalgesia is where the use of opioids actually prime the body to become more sensitive to pain, even after the opioid has left the body. So in essence, people unaware of this problem think they are reliant on opioids, but in reality taking the opioids may make them more likely to need more analgesia. It's pretty messed up actually, and there should be more education about it, particularly to the doctors doing the prescribing.

The really shifty part is, now that there have been so many problems, people like me that need opioids to function now have to jump through numerous hoops to get the medications we need. In my case, my doctor retired and the office sent home a letter saying they'll keep me as a patient, but will no longer prescribe pain medications of any kind. I would just switch doctors, but we have a severe shortage here and waiting lists for doctors are 2-5 years long. As it stands, I'm not at all sure what to do...it's as if they want me to buy pills on the black market.
I've been on opioid pain meds for 15 years (+-) and I've never abused them. Lucky for me, I hate how they make me feel if I take too much.

Is Organic Food Worse For You?

ghark says...

Perhaps the most important thing with anything that you buy from the store is to read the label, organic or not. There are brands that try to use clever labeling to try to mislead customers, as the video alludes to.

One of the ways labeling can be deceptive is that it is often extremely unclear where the ingredients come from. A box of cereal might be 100% organic, but if the ingredients are all from China you simply cannot know what quality you're buying, for a multitude of reasons, including poor regulation, poor water quality etc.

A couple of other points:

Farming traditionally, without synthetic (petrochemical) fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides is sustainable... forever.
Farming techniques that require oil will have to be phased out eventually, because it's a finite resource. So in this regard, the video is wrong (in regards to them both being able to sit side by side), at least in the long term.

Grow your own food (you don't need much space for a garden), or buy local. Transportation/shipping causes an unbelievable amount of pollution.

MASSIVE Yellow Jacket wasp nest in Florida

ghark says...

Set fire to one probably half that size on the farm once. Smaller sized nests are really common and quite well camouflaged, so you don't really notice them until you look carefully. They are often under grass at the top of banks, or under eaves, just in odd spots that you wouldn't normally look.

The big one we destroyed was just out in the open in the middle of the forest, I wonder how long something of this size takes to develop.
