Zero Punctuation: Medal of Honor Warfighter & Doom 3 BFG

Locque says...

I remember when Yahtzee was brand new on the interwebs and I thought he was the second coming. Since then, he's had his ups, a very long and boring down streak, and some in-betweens. He seems to have had a renaissance in quality more recently, and this review is particularly good, but it only affirms my opinion that he shouldn't be a slave to the review format. I think he'd be best employed just being free to rant about whatever gaming or game-related concerns he has from week to week, since a lot of his best ones involve him making a point about a game or the state of gaming anyway, more than they are technical reviews in any sense.

Shelter: a look at Manchester's homeless

Locque says...

I used to live in Lancs a while ago, and whenever I went in to Manchester there was this one homeless guy I'd always recognise and give a few bob to. We weren't mates or anything but we spoke a few times, and he seemed like the most normal guy on earth, mostly. I still wonder sometimes if he's still there, or if he ever wondered where I went. I slipped him a 20 once and it seemed to make his whole week, which in turn made me feel bad. Homelessness- or people's perception and attitudes to it, is fascinating, though a pretty dark subject. People make all kinds of excuses to themselves to justify their callousness. I know because I do it too.

Prometheus Actually Explained (With Real Answers)

Locque says...

FTR, I liked Prometheus a little bit, but I felt that way too many questions had been built into the movie that didn't have any coherent, or non-retarded answers. Also a bunch of the characters are completely idiotic and incomprehensible. It's a curious mishmash. The thing is, a lot of the questions that people do have are actually answered in the film, if you look hard enough. Others clearly aren't, and this video isn't nearly as plausible as it seems to think it is.

Beyond Scared Straight - This Guy is Scary!

Locque says...

I honestly think scaring and humiliating kids isn't okay to do... but at the same time, I genuinely do think an experience like this one can *contribute* to getting someone back on the right track, or rather, helping them to put themselves on the right track. But it doesn't work in isolation, it also needs guidance, care, and positive re-enforcement. Nor do I think this kind of approach should be part of anyone's Plan A.

TYT - Chris Wallace Nails Paul Ryan to the Wall

Locque says...

Cenk is a guy who might be all right to hang out with, and I like and most often agree with his opinions, but I seriously wish he'd shut the fuck up almost every time I watch TYT, with some rare exceptions. His lines and delivery are so bad, the material would be better off presented in a vacuum
he adds literally nothing.

It amazes me that bobknight isn't automatically filed away as a troll. He tries so damn hard. Bill O' was comparatively machiavellian.

It's his tone that gives him away, rather than the sum of his contents, but I suppose. It just seems obvious to me. But who knows, he really might believe what he says. But I don't think so. Yet.

Mitt's Magical Mormon Undies: Penn Jillette's Rant Redux

Locque says...

Mormonism seems cosmetically more ridiculous because it's new: we know miracles and magic didn't happen within the last couple of centuries; it only happens an inteterminate period of time so long ago that any real verification is impossible. Obviously. God prefers obfuscation, so he never shows up anymore for fear of some miracle or magic being captured on someone's cellphone and giving people a better reason to believe than "some guy said so."

Pressure point Self-defence - brings the pain quickly

Locque says...

>> ^Deano:

My take is that one shouldn't be too quick to refute this. All my watching of martial arts/self-defence clips suggests that the highly trained know how to apply force precisely, quickly and very effectively.

>> ^dannym3141:

^ Yeah. I mean, imagine spending all of your waking hours learning that, in the same way as anyone else might have a job?

I know, I've been studying martial arts for a long time, from teachers I now recognise to be charlatans, others I know now to be misguided, and guys now that currently have me convinced their style and training method is optimal. I'm not outright calling this fake- I don't know enough to do so. But I'd definitely be suspicious that the acting is being hammed up for the video to make the techniques appear more effective against a determined attacker than they might otherwise be in real life. Just as you guys say don't be so quick to dismiss, I'd counter with "Don't be so quick to believe." I've had teachers who could make me flinch in agony with little effort showcasing their techniques, but who I am pretty sure were we to meet right now, as out of shape as I am, I'd probably win if we fought.
On a lighter note: HELP! I'M TRAPPED IN HERE! SOMEONE TEACH ME ABOUT FORMATTING!

Pressure point Self-defence - brings the pain quickly

I'm no expert but it also looks real to me. My dad was always about pressure points. Which made for occasionally painful roughhousing. I wonder how this guy would handle the whole crazy knife wielding attacker thing -

>> ^Locque:
This looks fake, or exaggerated to me. The constant flinching and dropping/groaning would make him a serious asshole for inflicting such pain unnecessarily, but it also seems reminiscent of the wing chun tap-tap-tap style of fighting, which isn't really effectve, afaik, although this guy seems to target perhaps more legitimate pressure points, but I wouldn't know, I'm far from an expert. Either way, this triggered my sceptic alarm.

I do think he's properly hitting the guy though. And he's hitting some pretty delicate places too. Catching the liver is seriously uncomfortable. I think the hits are real and i think the reactions are real but whether this would be any use i have no idea. I mean we can all have someone stand there whilst we hit them and cause pain, that's not the hard bit

Watch how he reacts when hit in the bicep. I've taken some heavy blows to the bicep like that while studying under some less legitimate teachers, and the reaction's never been as strong as it was for that guy. I'm such a novice that I honestly can't call this for being BS or ineffective, but this still has alarm bells ringing. Other stuff, like being punched in the ribs or smacked in the throat, are kinda no-brainers, they do hurt. Although the guy being repeatedly dropped by that punch in the abdomen through the shield still seems exaggerated.
