Posting easy bet videos from Reddit's front page

Hi all,
Just something I've noticed in the last few moths since I got involved in Reddit, videos that are front paged there are easy bets for going top 15 on videosift. Frequently with the same or similar title to that used on Reddit.

I have really mixed feelings about this. Is there a way that the videosift points system could reward posters of videos that were not plucked from there? A way that real rare undiscovered gems could be rewarded above these? I've passed up on at least 5 in the last week that I knew would go top 15 here easily. About 12 hours ago here in Ireland that video of the little Asian girl percussionist was front page on reddit. 7 hous ago it was on videosift with a very similar title to the reddit one.

What does anytone think about this? I'm just afraid of videosift becoming (more than ever) a race to get there first, rather than worrying about quality, it becomes a who-can-post-videos-from-Reddit-first machine.

They added a 'Talent Scout' badge here at VideoSift to encourage people to find videos that aren't on the most popular sites like Reddit... but only 2 people have that badge so far... So get hunting!

That's exactly what I was going to say. The Talent Scout badge is specifically designed to help unearth things that haven't made it big on other sites yet.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I mean the top videos on reddit are likely to have been spread around facebook, other forums etc. They are the videos of the moment. Adding them here allows us to discuss them with our unique Videosift opinions and banter.

It would be weird not seeing some of the reddit videos here. VideoSift (as the name implies) is about finding the best videos. If a video has been voted on so many times that it's made it up to the first few pages of reddit, then it's usually got a certain level of quality, uniqueness or interest.

Yeah like I said, I've mixed feelings. And no answers. True about the comments / discussion thing - Reddit is so vast and random that I don't feel like engaging with it the way I do here on stuff like this. Good news about the badge, but I was thinking more along the lines of a vote weighting or something. I hate coming to videosift and seeing 6 videos in the top 15 that are from Reddit front page in the last few days. KInd of takes away from the uniqueness that first appealed to me about this site when I found it a few years ago. Is there a way to see more than the top 30 videos here so as to catch some of the further bubbling under videos?

Thanks too for answering Dag.

I noticed the same thing when I started browsing reddit a while ago. Some sifters definitely use it as a source, but like dag said:Popular videos start showing up on alot of sites and eventually trickle down to other sites. Doesn't necessarily mean the videos were found on reddit.

Besides, I applaud all the sifters, who obviously put a lot of time and effort into supplying this site with content. I think it's understandable that some might have their go-to sites for new videos and don't fancy scouring the depths of the web in order to discover something before everyone else.

The other thing I'd say about videos from Reddit - is that there is such a vast quantity that, blink and you'll miss it.

VideoSift's mandate is to be a filter from other larger sources - whether we are sifting in the vast ocean YouTube or sifting from the large inland sea of Reddit - we're still sifting the best videos for here.

I posted a poll about this kind of thing recently, not where the videos are coming from, but the fact that the titles are so often exactly the same. It's obviously fine sometimes when you can't think of anything good at all, but when you see the same people doing it as a matter of course, to me it's just lame.
