On Seniority for Power Point Accrual

I have a little print-out by my desk that says "strive for clarity but be comfortable with ambiguity". Since we've launched VideoSift 5.0 there has been quite a bit of ambiguity about promotes, power points and other features. Even though @lucky760 and I are here every day - we don't know everything about what makes VideoSift tick. It's like a pocket watch that's a blend of gears and some kind of plant that grows on its own and powers the watch.

By associating maximum power points to years of seniority on VideoSift - I didn't realize that we'd be causing real hurt feelings. If I was callous, I would say that many people were "butt-hurt". But I am not. Some Sifters thought that this was a deliberate effort to shoot down high-performing new members.

I can tell you for certain, this was never thought of by Lucky or myself. We tend to look at things on a systematic level- we try to to feed the plant and grease the gears that powers this mutant pocket watch.

What I can tell you is that the systematic problem that we wanted to fix, a small one about stock-piling of power points, is far outweighed by the trauma the solution seems to have caused. So, effective immediately, we've undone the change to limit maximum power points by years of Sift service. I hope this provides some clarity. Sorry for the pain.

Why is stockpiling power points bad? What do you have against the 1% you socialist?

Actually I've stockpiled powerpoints, but only because I haven't felt the need to use them. As for a form of currency, I could see how it could be "abused" but I have yet to figure out how or why. I guess if a select few found a way to beat the system, something should be done by way of regulatory. Maybe put a time limit between spending power points?

We thought about time limits- honestly, I just don't want to touch it. Powepoints are like Medicare, the 3rd rail of Sift politics.

My current contest would be so much easier to award the 25 power points I promised to someone if you make unlimited points available to all-

Here's the deal- This place can get fun when someone gets a wild hair and starts promoting stuff, handing out qualities, etc. It's similar to Farmville except it's not fucking gay, AND, it awards effort and emotion, creativity and intent, with something rather than some totey fake tree or goat.....Sentiment. This prize may be regarded as an incalculable spiritual link to us all.

Please just tell us when you guys are going to finally stop fucking with shit, m'kay??

I am all about the win-win.... Can you share with us what the problem is with stock-piling points? I'm with rottenseed, I can't see what harm is caused by a big pile of points.

If we could understand the nature of the concern, maybe those of us who are here more than you are can help solve the problem, since we are much closer to the daily workings.

And good job on not being callous! It is really appreciated!

Is this just idle curiosity or are you really looking for me to post examples from the last 7 years where people with axes to grind have wielded power to make a point on the front page?

Do you really want me to pick at scabs or can you be content that we've made the change back?

bareboards2 said:

Are you saying that some Sifters have stockpiled points and then used them to attack the Sift? Or to attack other Sifters?

Power points can only be used to promote vids in one way or another. How is that an attack?

Has something happened that I missed? Wouldn't be the first time....

I'm honestly trying to understand.

You and lucky had a problem. By putting the PP thing back to where it was to start with, whatever your problem was isn't solved.

I was just trying to understand so maybe we Sifters could help crowdsource a solution.

Sorry if my good intentions aren't clear.

Without bringing up actual examples - I don't think I can be any clearer. Let's let sleeping promotes lie. As I said in my post - it wasn't a big problem. And definitely not worth any more grief, eh?

Thank you Dag [and Rommel] ... one of the best things I've found with the Sift is that you two truly care about the site AND it's members. That's reason enough to stick around and try to do my best to help make this a successful venture for us all. Mad Love to you.

Scabs! C'mon, dredge up the past... it's the only way we'll learn

previously on Videosift...I seem to remember doing what I always do when I get a pocket fulla points-I used em up all really fast while I was rollin', usually on other people's videos and a LOT of sift talk posts. It'[s a way of saying , "Hey, I like the cut of your jib!" * quality!

Now, powers?? That's a different beast altogether. Why, as well as flagrantly abusing the powers I had earned through tenure and hard work I also set out, on occasion, to spank insolent children when their bullshit started stackikng-up so high it began to waft. Yes. I don't work well with ALL, just most others.

There came a time when the mob ruled in the favor of a handful of cunts, I trust this won;t be an issue in future, as everyone knows how to engage in civil PRIVATE (hint, hint, douchebags) discourse before pulling out weapons.

The worst part of being banned unilaterally by a single user is not having an arena to adjust grievances mutually and correct simple misunderstandings....You must simply watch as assholes make shit up after you are gone.

I am sure that if anyone lurking smells a personal resemblance to the aforementioned odor, they are now welcome to come forward anytime, and kiss my natural euro-mutt ass!!

I hope that this bit of personal reflection has afforded you with a better understanding of the shaping of Videosiftistory dynamics.

Can anyone do a quick recap for those of use who are late to this/didn't care/understand very well?

You know a "previously on Videosift..."

bareboards2 says...

@Deano...

Max power points were limited to the number of years you were on the Sift, with Sift 5.

So the max power points anyone could have was 6, since the Sift has been around for only 6 years. So if you already had 6 PPs, if you hit #1 to earn 2 PPs, you got nothing.

I could have lived with that.

But the serious problem, in my eyes, was what happened to newbies. Unless they paid to be charter, they would have to be on the Sift for more than 1 year, 364 days before they would be able to "earn" 2 PPs.

So someone like Punkin, who comes in here with videos ablazing, figuring out the Sift in no time flat, would not be able to have the success she has had. Can never promote her own stuff, doesn't "earn" her rewards which she has been generously sharing (not trading, but sharing).... someone like Punkin would never happen again on the Sift under these limitations. I think the Sift would be a less rich place for her absence, and others like her.

So that is the stripped down backstory. With my opinion slathered all over it. Tis best if you can be careful to separate the bare bones of the situation from my editorial content. All opinions are just mine, after all.

I had thought if they wanted to limit PPs, to avoid hoarding, they should have had everyone be limited to six PPs. That is enough to have time to spend some before the next ones are earned. Then you have a level playing field that doesn't reward seniority at the cost of stellar Sifting.

And then each year, it would go up one PP. As a Sift birthday present to everyone.

But they went with just going back to the old system, with its old pitfalls still in place. That is fine, too. In my opinion.

xxovercastxx says...

I think I misunderstood how this was supposed to work in VS5 in the first place. I thought it was that we recharged up to <years> points now, rather than the ultimate cap being <years>.

I was happy about my (incorrect) interpretation. I can't say I care either way about the reality of it.

mintbbb says...

There was a time in VS when getting to Top15 didn't give you PPs, top15 videos didn't get any record of them being in the top, no badges. You really had to work for your PPs. And I imagine VS before my time (over 4 years ago) was even more rough. Not just with earning PPs, but to get stuff sifted and all.

Things are pretty darn good these days. Sometimes way too good. People like Pumpin would find their way to be successfull even without the current system. All of us old-timers did. Lets just be grateful for what we have. dag and lucky are doing only what they think is best for the sift.

I am happy to have the PP cap limit removed. Not because I plot to do evil things with my PPs. I am happy to get rewards for success. I just hope people will use PPs to promote wisely. Do not promote a video just because it went to a pqueue. Do not promote just because it was submitted by somebody special. Do not promote just because you do not know what to do with your PP.

But then, maybe it is just me. I do not make friends easily and I am not active here to see all that's going on. I just submit a bunch of stuff, then run along, and miss lots of the action here (on purpose.. some people here can just make me want to tear my hair off...)

If there is a concern about using PPs. just put a daily use cap. But keep giving us the PPs we have earned!

Thanks, dag and lucky

Tell me t'shut up will yas???! Clarification, whiny.
I thought Deano was simply unclear due to his recent tenure and connected the stockpiling of points with some bad shit that could be done wit them that I never paid attention to ....My sins were giving to much information and prizes away too carelessly.

Here's an Idea:
The more power points that can be unilaterally collected through repairing dead videos (as I do) and making people happy, well, serves to say that these two activities regularly exercised EFFECT beneficially the experience here and CAUSE people want to smile....so fuck me, I'm a fucking asshole for ranting about fun stuff, kiss my natural white ass and have a nice day

(so is now when I hit the fucking sarchasm button??)
