It's Time ...

It's been over 2 and a half years since the last major overhaul of VideoSift. The time has come to reinvent our community again.

Other than open source development projects, I can think of no other community that is built so much out of the ideas of its members. Roughly, I would say that 60% of the features of the site have come from the input of Sifters.

We're not trying to tear down the good stuff that we have already built, but we're not afraid to change.

We're just beginning the planning stage and right now we need feedback. What features do you love and what frustrates the hell out of you? What should we ditch and what do we need? Don't be afraid to go negative either - we can take it. Brickbats are welcome.

How about that for starters.

Outsiders lurking behind, in, forward, and beyond might be inclined to or otherwise conclude that the choice portions left to the site extant, are left to a minority of satisfied customers.

Is it possible to have playlists working as playlists, automatically moving from one vid to the next? That would be particularly useful for audiosifts. If it's already possible, please edumacate me

I particularly like beggar's canyon and the lounge, but have yet to interact with anyone in the myriad of IM minilounges (has anyone?).

Hybrid says...

1. Make it so I can choose a custom thumbnail in the actual submission page. I would be happy with just this!

2. Ditch the Top 10 Lounge Lizards box from the front page. Not all member ranks can access the lounge anyway.

3. Remove the "login with facebook" button from the top of the page, and put that onto the member login page directly. So a user either logs in with facebook or their username & password. That seems to be the standard way of doing things.

4. Clean up all the social networking integrations/icons/text about the place. A generic "social networking" panel on the right of the page (perhaps replacing the Top 10 lounge lizards box), might be a cleaner way of doing things.

5. A dynamic ticker bar for the top of site, viewable on most pages. Cycles recent "news items" and by that I mean: Videos hitting #1, videos going Top 15, members ranking up, new sift talk posts, new blog posts. Maybe even badge awards (though that might be a lot of news items to cycle).... When news items are low it could generate informal ones like "@dag is only 3 sifts away from getting their crown. Click here to look at their pqueue" etc. I actually had a similar idea for just publicising member rankings before: http://videosift.com/talk/Publicize-member-rank-increases

6. Auto-generated sift talk posts by Siftbot when a member reaches gold or above? Could be a nice way to make sure people don't go unnoticed when they rank up? Though I am aware that there have been some great custom, new rank sift talk posts in the past, so it would lose that aspect.

7. A page (similar to the no thumbs page), that has all the videos that have had dupeof called on them, but are awaiting the second isdupe invocation. Also, I think we do need a *notdupe invocation to cancel out bad dupeof calls, before someone randomly calls *isdupe without proper checking.

8. Ditch Beggar's Canyon.

9. Server load permitting I guess, but open up the lounge to all non-probie ranks.

10. The ability to transfer powerpoints to another member. I know, strange request, but it'd be nice to have this for those times when members want to reward another for helping them out with finding a video or something.

oritteropo says...

Don't care about 1, like the idea of 2,3,4,5,7, and 10.

6 No no no no no and more no.

8 Get rid of my favourite part of the sift? Why would you want to do that? It is the repository of videos which were overlooked in the queue, but like by their submitter. Even if I don't always vote for them, the choices are interesting. It's generally crown members who no longer care about it btw...

9 A world of no. Having a single open lounge instead of the myriad of IM minilounges would be OK though. Allowing bronze members into the lounge would also be OK. If anyone causes trouble, surely a kick could be added?

And this from the guy who just wants custom thumbnails

I love #6 too. It's such a shame we don't seem to make such a celebration of people's milestones like we used to. I really don't think the community is any less inclined, just that we've got lax about it.

JiggaJonson says...

Don't ditch beggars canyon, but make it more accessible. Right now it's buried under layers of menu and it's all but forgotten. Similarly, you only see the Videos Expiring Soon, if you're in the unsifted section (which visitors to the site would never see).

Perhaps we could take Beggars Canyon, Top Expiring Soon, and Top Videos, and combine them into a layout so they are either framing the page on either side of the scree, in a longer list on one side of the screen, or made easily accessible through one click expand/collapse lists. I think my latter idea is most practical to save on page loading time AND bring those other lists to the front page.

@Shepppard @Barseps I'm in firm agreement about keeping the dark mode around.

And can we modify the way power points are handled with regard to only having/getting one at a time trickling into my account. It'd be nice if they rolled over up to a higher number (5? 10?) so I could actually use some of them to promote some of my own videos I like without having to purchase more. I really like promoting other's videos [Shows off "Assister" Level 7 Badge] but after promoting other people's stuff, when I get awarded an extra power point, I'm back at only one point that's replaced the one I recently used.

My only alternatives if I want to promote my own stuff is to NOT assist others with my power points while I wait for a comment applauded point or a top 15 video admission. Either that or purchase power points, but I'm poor :-(

Could you provide a simple list of video titles, sortable by submission time/date and hotness? No thumbnail, no tags, no description -- just a plain, old overview. Just as an alternative for those of us who can handle walls of text much better than mountains of pictures.

Sarzy says...

Ditch Beggar's Canyon and bring back the requeue. Seriously, it's been years and I still miss that function. Either way, Beggar's Canyon definitely needs to be overhauled somehow, because it's pretty useless as it is.

Stingray says...

1. Would it be possible to make the size of the video embeds bigger? I have a 20" widescreen monitor, and I can barely see the videos. At the very least, can we make it a configurable option on how large the videos can be? I like YouTube's change on their web site in that they give you the choice to have the videos small, large and full screen.

2. Also, I'm definitely in agreement over the "less is more" argument. There's too much stuff vying for attention on any given page. Take a look at the vimeo.com page. I like how the right hand columns have clear and distinct headers.

3. Can we please have a bug submission page or section? There are lots of times things either stop working or enhancements are suggested. To put these bugs in sift talk seems wrong.

4. Perhaps a wiki page so that documentation can be updated by the community as well?

Stingray says...

I used to use the beg invocation a lot, but since no one visits it, there's no point. I use promote instead, because then it gets shown on the front page. beg and promote sort of do the same thing, but promote is seen by more people.

Also, what about comment threads? Quoting is nice, but it would be better if people can respond within the same structure. Have a tree like view and you can expand and collapse them.

It gets really difficult trying to read rather large discussions where multiple people are discussing with others.

thegrimsleeper says...

Can you make the embeds bigger? 500 pixels is way too small. If you move the sidebar a little bit down you can make the videos much bigger and still not break the site for people using low resolution monitors. I was thinking the default size for YouTube videos should be 854x510 since most YT videos are 480p and up, and the default for other video hosts should be 640 pixels wide.

I made some pictures: YouTube, other video hosts

Ryjkyj says...

Easy access to a "Best videos of the last six months" (or something similar) page. Maybe even a constant "best vids of all time".

So much content goes through this site that anyone but the most dedicated user is bound to miss a ton of it. Our first option is the top fifteen, or we could check specific channels, or even browse playlists, but other than that, a custom search for videos is required.

There's so much great stuff here, I just think that easier access would bring more and more people.

Zifnab says...

I'd like to see more support for iFrame embeds. I appreciate that Siftbot now likes iFrame from select sites, but I am running into more and more sites that only supply iFrame embed codes that are not supported. For example The Onion is listed as a supported host, but The Onion now only posts iFrame embed which Siftbot won't accept.

Barseps says...

How about a little "pop-up" box when you hover the cursor over sift lounge so you can see who's in there? You may want to avoid/speak to somebody & it will tell you if it's a good or bad idea to carry on.

I would like to see more gamefication of videosift. We already have Star Points, Power Points and achievements, but I would like it to be fleshed out some more.

Essentially, I want a character screen where I can see all the progress I'm making.

Of course, there should be some checks and balances to stop it from going overboard, for instance: giving a reward for voting on videos with less than 10 votes, would just lead to spam votes. Some sort of mechanic should be present to keep it balanced, but still reward those "Knights of Unsifted".

Boise_Lib says...

Beggar's Canyon is essential to noobies--please don't take it away.
You only get One PP (self-promote takes two PP) and the Only opportunity to get more eyeballs on your video is to send it to the canyon. If you don't use it--don't use it--but leave it there for those who do. I, for one, try to visit Beggar's Canyon once a week.

(I'm going by memory here. The Starpowers page must be under construction)

IM was a really cool idea, but after the first day I've never used it.

I really like @Barseps idea about peeking into the Lounge to see who's there.

I think stars should be an achievement I see no value in cleaning your own sifted queue if it's going to drop you back down a few levels and all your hard work is disappears with some spring cleaning. Maybe star points should be a total of videos sifted ever whether they are dead or alive.

As a recently new channel owner, I find it fairly difficult to monitor what videos are new in my channel. I was told an elaborate way in the search function to list newest additions to a channel vs the scatter it is. I would like an option for channel owners to have the ability to list what is the newest addition to a list or category or channel or whatnot, so I do not have to memorize the two pages of my channel.

If there is an actual option for such things I would like to know, if I am spot on and deserve a back rub, upvote away.

But dammit I want to see whats new without all the hullabaloo !

critical_d says...

Some Ideas:

- Tags: When I post a video to the Sift, it can be tough to figure out what to tag the vid with. If I take the time to be creative and thoughtful when writing a description, title and channel, then tags seem redundant. I can see where tags are helpful when using the advanced search so I do understand the importance. Being a visual person, I find tag clouds useful. If it were a simple panel on the sidebar or a dedicated page, having something to browse would be cool. Ideally the tag cloud would automatically assign more "weight" to the popular terms and they would appear in a larger or heavier font.

- Badges: I like being recognized for mundane actions such as flagging dead videos and assigning a running to vids that have none. Definitely keep the badges!

- Channels: On the submission page, it would be helpful to have a short description for the channel. Maybe this could appear when doing a mouse over the title so the page isn't too crowded.

- Duplicates: I don't know what kind of algorithm the site uses when searching for dups but it is a head scratcher. Maybe it's me being lazy and not searching thoroughly before submitting?

- Top 10 Lounge Lizards: This should rotate between the top 10 for each badge..not just the Lizards.

jonny says...

I know this is long, so please bear with me. Before I get to my suggestions, though, let me begin with a couple of caveats so you don't tune out everything else if your initial reaction is negative. First, with one notable exception, this suggestion doesn't remove any functionality that you want to keep. And two, the ideas are intended to simplify the conceptual framework of some of the existing functionality, and hopefully the interface as a result.

Conceptually, all of the video listing pages (Front, Unsifted, Beggar's Canyon, Hot, Dead Pool, etc.) are nothing more than searches with different parameters of all of the videos available here. From that perspective, the Unsifted Tab is a search for all videos with fewer than 10 votes submitted (or resubmitted via promote, etc.) within the last 2 days. I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to search for all similar videos submitted within the last 5 days, for instance. Or 30 days. Ultimately, the Unsifted tab can be analogous to the Sifted Tab, with no restriction on submission date at all.

The first consequence of this (the notable exception mentioned above) is that the allowed rate of video submission has to be redefined in terms of number of videos over time, as opposed to number of videos simultaneously in the queue. With a little forethought and experimentation, it should not be hard to reproduce a very similar rate of submission to what we currently have. It might not be possible to exactly match the current rate, but we should be able to get pretty close.

Another immediate consequence is that PQueues are obsolete. The exact same functionality would be served by the Unsifted queue itself. Beggar's Canyon still makes sense, but I think a more effective approach would be to allow any member to requeue an unsifted video (resetting the submit date, but not for the purposes of dupes), requiring a power point and a submit slot. The latter is also simpler and more direct than Beggar's Canyon, which requires the viewer to go to a different page of videos.

The 'promote' and 'quality' invocations should function exactly as before, putting a video in the promotion box and/or pushing it to the front of the queue. (Side note: the practice of promoting one's own videos (and I do it myself) goes against one of the fundamental principles of VideoSift. I've never understood why this was started. I'd like to see this ability removed, but if it does stay it would work similarly, requiring 2 power points, but not a submission slot). Also, the 'dead' invocation would make sense and work on unsifted videos (though, if you wanted, you could still restrict that, possibly just discarding dead unsifted videos).

Perhaps most importantly, this conception of the video listing pages opens up any number of other possible pre-defined searches (similar to any other listing, like Top or Hot). "Almost There" could show all Unsifted videos with 9 votes. "Bottom of the Barrel" could show all videos with 0 or less votes. Whatever searches are most likely to direct users to the videos they are most interested in. You could even let members save their own predefined searches as a menu option.

An analogous conceptual framework can also apply to the other fundamental VideoSift activity - Community. Commenting on videos or profiles, sift and channel talk posts, the lounge, blogs, badges/awards, etc., can all be thought of as different 'searches' through the community space, at least from a navigational point of view. Taken as a whole, this conceptual framework suggests a natural layout of the interface menus:

Video

Sifted, Unsifted, Hot, Top, Recommended, Random, Dead(, Beggar's Canyon)
Community
Sift Talk, Top Discussions, Recent Comments, My Comments, Members, Blogs, Lounge
Help
    FAQ, Rules/Guidelines, How-Tos
Login/Register
Profile, Prefs/Profile Settings, Facebook, Google+, Logout

I've omitted or glossed over some details, but this is already too long, so I'll stop here and wait for any feedback/questions.

You people are all missing the important stuff.

1. Enforce quoting ettiquette so that those overexcited souls who take over comment threads can only quote the first layer of any discussion (does that make any sense?). See above comment for a standard example of ugly quoting.

2. How about making notifications appear on your profile page, rather than that hotmail address I never use any more. I don't want to be annoyed by notifications, but if I'm on the Sift - that's when I want to see how many people quoted me, referenced me, and in general just noted how awesome my comments and occasional videos are.

Otherwise, everything's fine.

Shepppard says...

@kymbos makes a good point.

Would it be possible to snip quotes down to the last two things you're quoting?

Example: (1)I say something, (2)Someone quotes me on it => (3)I quote them on it, we're now at two quotes (1 & 2) and my response (3).

(4)Someone quotes me again, their post now shows (2 & 3), and (4). and so on.

That may sound confusing as hell, but on the incredibly talky posts you eventually reach a point where you've scrolled past almost every post twice because of the original, and then again from one person quoting it. and then a third, fourth, etc. making pages far, far too long.

Maybe there could even be an "Expand" button, that could show you the entire batch of quotes, but only show the most recent 2.

MrFisk says...

Channel managers should be able to add/remove videos to their channels without having to waste message space. Perhaps, a button on the side of a video, or something? I bet more than half of my comments are wasted with "*controversy."

Submitting videos should be featured more prominently.

New users should have an easier time signing up (I know of some who get discouraged and abandon their attempts after too many failed usernames, yada yada yada).

MrFisk says...

Oh, and somehow ease the search of members.

And, is there a way we can search multiple channels? For example, if I'm looking for a controversial documentary about art, it wastes too much time searching each individual channel.

This was added to controversy and now I can honestly barely read anything on this page, to the point where i'm considering taking it out of controversy.

NetRunner says...

Riffing off @Shepppard's ideas for improvements to quotations on the sift, I'd also like to see more support for doing stuff like this.

Ideally I'd like to be able to just highlight text in the original comment, and click a quote button, and have it create an inline quote block like that.

NetRunner says...

And while I'm thinking of it, I should link to my comment from a couple weeks ago about awarding people a star point when someone else promotes/qualities one of their videos.

Along those lines, I'd also say quality & promote should just be combined, and allow multiple invocations to result in cumulative effect -- more time in "promoted" status, and an additional boost to hotness.

The net result of all those changes would be to make there be greater rewards for sifters who post videos that move people to not just upvote, but spend their power points to applaud them, while also making promote something worth doing even if it's an off-peak time of day.

Thanks everyone - I've got it all down. Expect some of your ideas to feed into VideoSift 5. I'll be posting other requests for feedback as we progress - honing in on particular areas like channels.

Fletch says...

I'm late to this thread and didn't read all the comments. Sorry.

Only a couple things:

- When assigning channels for a submitted video, it would be REALLY nice if hovering over a channel for a second or so brought up a COMPLETE and SPECIFIC description of EXACTLY what kind of video warrants said channel flag. Also, when "nochannel" is invoked, the subsequent siftbot comment links to the applicable section of the FAQ which contains NO HELPFUL INFORMATION on proper channel assignments. A complete list somewhere WITH DESCRIPTIONS would also be helpful.

- Sift Lounge. I want to be able to see who is present without having to join. Hovering over the Sift Lounge link should bring up a list of current... loungers. Also, it would be awesome to be able to have a private conversation within the lounge (if this is already possible... nm). Multiple rooms would be cool, but private conversations/rooms should be limited to two members as a clique countermeasure.

This stuff: http://videosift.com/talk/Time-to-Trim-the-Interface?loadcomm=1#comment-1390141

I would like to see comment formatting done with simple markup rather than HTML. It would make trimming down or breaking up quotes easier and would be much easier in general for less technical users.

I was against threaded comments when it was brought up a while back because we rarely got that many comments on a video. Now I'm thinking it's justified or will be in the near future.

I would like the floating/pinned comment box idea to be polished. At the very least make the setting sticky. Even better if it was a pop-out deal like the IM function.

We don't need *beg or *requeue anymore, we've got *promote. Adjust the power point cap so everyone can use it, if necessary. Please don't make us requeue our videos every 8 hours to keep them alive. Let masochists like @Sarzy get their abuse elsewhere.

If we must continue down the road to MMOVideoSift, please take extra care not to work against quality with new features. I'm still convinced that this has been a big part of the dip in variety over the years.

Give us a "page scraper". Let us submit any URL, like we can do with youtube, and let @siftbot scrape the page for valid embeds, presenting us with a list to choose from. Think of it the same way you pick a thumbnail when you share a link on Facebook.

Make tags show on-hover so as not to give away spoilers (without requiring us to leave valuable tags out).

How about some super tooltips? http://i.imgur.com/H4c7q.png

Here's some small tweaks that I think would be nice.

On the advanced search screen, the options for Search Type should be "Videos", "SiftTalk", "Comments", and "Blogs". In other words, take "Search" out of the text. That way you can tab into the field, press V, S, C or B and keep on tabbing.

Status doesn't have enough options to warrant the awful multi-selector widget. Just give us some checkboxes.

Whaaaat? It's been a while since we had the requeue, so I'm going to assume you've forgotten how it worked, and somehow made it more arduous in your mind over the years. You only had to requeue a video once every couple of days. That's it. And no one was forcing you to do it. If you don't like it, just ignore it and go about your business as usual. But it made it a bajillion times easier to successfully sift stuff that's a bit off the beaten path (eg. not known properties like Zero Punctuation or Daily Show, or obvious vote-getters like a cute cat or something with boobies in the thumbnail).

Promote is okay, but unless you're buying powerpoints, you only get one every couple of days -- and personally, whenever I promote one of my own videos I feel like a jerk, because I feel like I should be using those points to promote or quality someone else's stuff.

Anyway, I don't think typing *requeue once every two days is particularly masochistic, but then maybe my definition of that word and yours differs somewhat.

I remember that it meant you had to continuously requeue your videos or they got discarded.

I remember that especially active members could keep their videos in the queue perpetually.

I remember that some of us just plain stopped submitting videos because we had so little chance of getting anything through.

I don't even think there's any need for the queue so obviously I'm not going to be a fan of requeue. (I first made my argument for no queues here.)

Though, as I was digging up that comment I just linked to, I found some discussion that reminded me that requeue had a different function prior to the disaster that I've been thinking of. Perhaps that's the requeue you're talking about.

This is similar in language to what @oritteropo said, but I think I'm saying something different here.

It's common to take multiple youtube videos, make a playlist on youtube and then embed that here. Some hosts don't allow playlist creation, though, and I've even had to sift multiple parts from different hosts at times. Can we get some way to build playlists of that sort here? Even if we can't automatically advance from one video to the next and we have to click links to go forward, being able to sift multi-part videos as a single entity would be a nice touch.

Yes, yes, yes. I've wanted to be able to do this since day 1. Submitting a post that is a playlist of items should let us just enumerate the embeds we want in the playlist, not have to build the playlist elsewhere and embed that. (This will also make it much easier to fix dead videos when the playlist is dead, but not the underlying videos themselves, which happens more than you might think.)

And I just keep going...

A customizable sidebar would be nice, ala Slashdot.

If this is not feasible, could we at least get unique id or class names on the containers so we can customize more easily with user styles?

Right since I'm playing around more with my own channel I want the following;

If I click Unsifted on a channel I want to see all the videos that were ever unsifted. At the moment they all hide in PQs, making no sense to me. A lot of good videos are hidden from browsers of the channel.

As a channel owner I want it to be more fun. Give us stats, so we can see historical data about numbers of videos submitted, votes cast, compare channels, do so over different periods etc etc. Basically more tools for channel owners.

@dag

In case it hasn't already been mentioned, I was thinking of these items recently:

1. Identify the video source. So that we know when things are posted via YouTube, Break, Vimeo and so on. I found it to be very helpful most recently with all these College Humor vids going dead and they had the little blurb added to all of them about being a sift partner. I was thinking that a small icon showing the video provider would be nice.

2. Allow videos to be tagged by a GPS location (lon/lat, address) using Google Maps or something. Why would this be helpful? For videos tagged, there can be a map view with the videos shown in context of the world. This way I could see all videos narrowed down to the eastern seaboard in comedy or news or something.

3. Along the same lines as #2, allow a video to be date and time stamped of when it occurred. These fields don't have to be required, but if this is a news event, it would be nice to input a date range and have a filter... (for example, 9/11).

Mouse over a channel assignment when submitting a video and have a defined description of what that channel is for. Currently it only reads the channels "header". When I submit a video I put my mouse over the Audio check box and it says "soundsift" I think it should include a description of the channels use so people do not have to go back and forth making sure they have the right channel assigned instead of guessing.

If we all got to promote our stuff to the front page there would be a disgusting influx and steady climb of bad videos on the front. All ready there is TOO MUCH promoted stuff. Keep the power points as they are 2-1 as it where. 2 for me to promote 1 to promote yours.

@lucky760 @dag Im pretty sure this has been brought up multiple times over the years.
Please fix the way the "avg votes per video" is calculated.
My understanding is that now its total votes(inc pque votes) divided by total sifted videos.
Should be changed to total sifted votes divided by total sifted videos.
or... dont call it average votes per video.
This is my biggest pet peeve and hope you can fix it. Thanks guys.

Never knew it was off. It's fixed, but not as you described. It is now TOTAL ACTIVE VIDEOS / ACTIVE VIDEO VOTES RECEIVED where "active video" is defined as a published, queued, or personal queued video.

The reason it's not strictly published videos is queued/pqueued videos are still active posts.

@dag @lucky760 xxovercastxx already mentioned it above, but can I second the option of a "spoiler" feature, where it blocks out text unless it's moused over. It'd be a nice feature to have regarding talks about movies/books/tele etc. Thanks!

It would be awfully nice if the powerpoints you earn from deadpool fixes could be stacked rather than having a limit of 1 (or two for charter). In general, a deadpool fix takes me between 5 and 20 minutes depending on whether or not there was a thumbnail, how good the tags were etc., and the times I can spend this much time on it tend to be bad times for actually using power points, like the middle of the night in the U.S.... argh!

oritteropo says...

Oh, and being able to promote discarded vids back into unsifted would be nice. At present there's not much difference between killed and discarded (except that sifty will take a powerpoint for a promote on a discarded vid but then do nothing else).

I'm starting to sound quite demanding, but is there any chance of getting accented characters (at least the set from ISO 8859-1) in the lounge? The whole type a word properly and get ..'s in it thing gets old awfully fast

Suggestion -

get ride of the music channel if it is going to be used the way it is. Or at least put a description on it. It is horrible, anything that has some notes in it gets placed there, its a joke. The 5.0 music channel should have an operator. The 5.0 music channel should have a description at the minimum.

Jes sayin.

Here's one I keep forgetting (for years) to ask for. I pretty much gave up on visiting the dead pool early on - would it be possible to search it only for videos you've voted on? Whenever I go in there I'm confronted with a bunch of videos I haven't watched and don't feel confident about fixing; presumably it's easier to remember and find fixes for videos you've watched and enjoyed. I've tried clicking through my own 'voted up' page, but weirdly dead videos don't show up there.

dingens says...

One minor thing: Now and then I see dead videos in the recommended section. It should be trivial to filter them out. Oh, and it would be nice to have an option to only get recommendations I haven't seen yet.

jonny says...

Great idea - and it should be fairly easy to implement. Just add another field group to the search page: Voted Up/Down/None. That would a useful addition for searching in general, in fact, not just for dead videos.

Let's have a display to see how many times a video has been emailed.
Also, let's make it where I can send emails to more than one person. As is, once I send a video through email, it's automatically stored. But in order email videos to groups of people I have copy/paste from my email account. It's an easily fixed hassle, or so I'd assume.

And can we get more videos on one page?
