It’s time to stop talking, Boomers
(A Tumblrette I follow* posted the following, which I find too good not to share, especially in light of Sift of the Week (http://videosift.com/video/America-is-NOT-the-greatest-country-in-the-world).)
Yes, yes, I know. Everything was so much better when you were younger. The music was better, the fashions were better, it was a simpler, more innocent time when children could still go outside to play. Not like now, with the rap music and the violence and the sex sex sex. Everything is so terrible, now.
The Baby Boomers really need to take the rose-coloured glasses off. Yes, things are terrible now, but it’s not like the 1950’s and 1960’s were some magical golden age where everyone shit rainbows and farted stardust. The 50’s and 60’s were, in fact, pretty goddamn terrible. A wall went up, dividing a city, a country, and countless families. Other countries were crushed under totalitarianism. The planet skirted the edge of disaster. Jim Crow ruled the American South. There were lynchings. Children were spat on for going to school, blown up in church basements, sprayed by fire hoses and attacked by dogs. People were murdered for daring to suggest that everyone was equal. A war was started under false pretenses, continued under false pretenses, and eventually ended in total defeat, making a mockery of the thousands who had died. There was terrorism. There were assassinations. And over all of it hung the threat of nuclear armageddon.
It is especially galling for us, your children, to hear you harp on about the 60’s, as it was your generation’s actions over the last four decades that have shaped the world into the shithole you insist it is. Post-secondary education coming with a side order of crippling debt? That was you. Jobs being difficult to find, even with said education? That was you. The collapse of the global financial system, leading to the decimation of the middle class? That was all you, baby.
So Boomers, next time you feel the urge to start up another chorus of “Everything Was So Much Better Back Then”, why don’t you instead go take a long, hard look in the mirror. This is the world you created. It’s not our fault you’re choking on it.
