John Oliver - Guardianship

moonsammy says...

What would you recommend for an alternative here? There are inevitably going to be seniors who don't have family available to help them, and who reach a point where they're unable to care for themselves. I can only think of four options at that point:
1) Hope there's a local charity that is willing to take care of them, has adequate funding to do so, and isn't abusive. If this is unregulated there's a high likelihood of abuse occurring, and if it is regulated then you have government involved, which appears to be something you'd oppose. There's also the issue of unequal access - if it's charitable then it's inherently not mandated, so it's nearly certain some people will not have any such charity in their area (see #3).
2) Somehow have private, non-charitable entities handle it? I've no idea how this would work, as any non-charity is pretty much by definition motivated by profit, and a profit motive plus caring for the elderly is certain to lead to abuse (perhaps not in all cases, but I'd expect it to be quite common).
3) Nothing / good luck, oldies.
4) Government intercession.

In this case, a safety net facilitated by the government strikes me as the best of the available options. The problems highlighted in the video seem likely to stem from insufficient oversight and planning. I'd wager that's due to lack of funding, as this is exactly the sort of program which would be seen as a low-risk target when budget cuts come around, at least from an electoral perspective. After all, if the people impacted by this are those who don't already have people in their life who care for and can advocate for them, and being put under guardianship removes their voting rights, then where's the harm to a politician in reducing the funding?

It seems to me that a well-funded guardianship program, with proper oversight in place, would have the best chance of minimizing the suffering of elderly individuals who can no longer care for themselves. I can understand the libertarian preference for minimal governmental interference in the lives of the public, but this strikes me as a case where that simply doesn't work. If you can think of a viable option #5, or can make a case for 1, 2, or 3 being legitimately more helpful than a well-run option #4 (which is clearly NOT what's discussed in the video), I'm absolutely open to considering it. At the same time, implementing #4 in a way which doesn't leave it vulnerable to budgetary volatility is also a not-insignificant challenge.

Damn, I'm procrastinating really well tonight. That was long.

Black Child Abducted and Assaulted by White Supremacists

newtboy says...

?! Well, that seems dumb. I guess I opted out on both screens I use. I thought you just meant when you hover over the channel name the description doesn't appear, and that the channel front page hadn't changed.
Yes, this needs to be addressed one way or the other.

If we're going to have a kids channel only for kid friendly videos, it MUST be enforced or it's child abuse, like pasting porn in a highlights magazine and placing it in a pediatrician's waiting room. If not, it should be removed as a channel imo.

Posted to @lucky760 on sift talk forum.

Edit: please don't ignore that the description has been cut and pasted into comments by multiple sifters (tagged with his name so they aren't missed) repeatedly, and manually removed by multiple sifters only to be retagged "kids" repeatedly, so ignorance is not an excuse, it is absolutely done knowingly and intentionally to make a point.

If the definitions were there i would personally hobble him as id consider it knowingly breaking the rules. Can't enforce something that doesn't exist anymore.

Michelle Wolf at 2018 White House Correspondents' Dinner

MilkmanDan says...

I vaguely remember Larry Wilmore doing it, but had forgotten the others. 100% agree that Obama was the highlight of the event by far while he was in office.

Whatever one's political leanings, I think that any objective party had to appreciate Obama's speaking skills.

ChaosEngine said:

Actually, I remember Obama's speeches better than the comedians. I had completely forgotten about Larry Wilmore, Wanda Sykes and even Seth Meyers (who is the whole damn reason we have Trump!).

Obama killed it.... easily the best orator of the past few decades (for US presidents).

Vox explains bump stocks

scheherazade says...

Corrections :

Lack of mechanical parts is not the reason a bump stock was deemed legal.
(Furthermore, they highlighted 'no automatically functional parts', while they said lack of mechanical parts.)

External attachment also does not disqualify an item from being considered part of a weapon.
For example, it's illegal to attach a foregrip to a pistol (because there are piles of insane gun laws already, making esoteric combinations of parts worth federal prison and 100'000 dollar fines.)

A machinegun is a gun that fires automatically.
Automatically is a mode where more than one shot comes out with 1 trigger pull.
Rate of fire does not define a machine gun.

A bump stock required the operator to trigger the weapon for every shot, which is why it was deemed not an automatic.

Shannon Sharpe on Trump, NFL and Protest

newtboy says...

So..which is it? The company dictates the rules (in which case stop your bullshit whining because the owners all stand with the protest) or some new draconian theory where freedom of speech only exists at home in your own yard (unless the president likes your message, then violent protest is patriotic anywhere)?

Trump is only pointing out how uppity these negros got under the darky president, and he's going to make America great again by fixing that.

You really...REALLY need a civics class, Bob. It's obvious that, if you've ever taken one, the information didn't stick.
Are you even aware that the "tradition" of teams standing at attention is 8 years old and a paid for marketing ploy for the military's recruitment where players are encouraged, but not required, to stand facing the flag at attention.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2017/sep/25/short-history-national-anthem-and-sports/

Trump's claim that this is about lack of gratitude is just one more in an endless string of lies and misdirection. I would think you would be sick of being jerked around like that, but clearly not yet. That's just as true as his claim shortly afterwards that the repeal and replace bill had passed....(it didn't even get a vote), or his claim that his new tax plan won't benefit him (but using his last available taxes as a true representation of his finances, it would save him around $1 BILLION and raise the rates on the poorest by at least 20%).
The peaceful protest is about racial inequality...which Trump highlights quite well, even as he denies it's existence.

NFL product and ticket sales, and total viewers are reportedly up. ESPN is only one network of dozens.

Nothing to do about racism just good old American patriotism..

I can't go around wearing a Trump or Obama hat while on the job as I meet customers.... Company dictate rules of conduct. Politics do not belong in the work environment.

Trump is only properly pointing out how ungrateful some are by disrespect the very unity of America activity of standing for the National Anthem..

Sales of NFL tickets and clothing and ESPN ratings will dictate the true direction of this .

Sargon of Akkad - This Week in Stupid (13/08/2017)

Asmo says...

Well you missed out the following highlights:

Awful optics of white guys standing around with tiki torches.
Proper breakdown of attendee groups
Short bit on the tiny ideological difference between antifa (communists) and white nationalists (nazis).
Commentary on Trump
More discussion on the rise of white hate which is creating new racists.
Left grading people by their skin colour (including lighter skinned people of colour)
etc

The entire point of the Daryl Davis sift was to show the importance of listening and hearing, to get to know the opinions of others. If you can't even spend 30 minutes listening to alternate opinions (and Sargon isn't even right wing/a supporter of the alt right...) that don't explicitly conform to everything you expect to hear, how do you ever learn?

It's the same confirmation bias that keeps the kkk on life support long after it should have died out.

I like the numbers rounds -- some other good videos out there of those. The most popular highlights from these letters rounds often show both teams coming up with the same rude/questionable word ("wankers" being an example cited at wikipedia) or when the random selection of letters spells out something dodgy:

KAMAZ Dakar Truck's Insane FOS Run

Mookal says...

Yep, the name comes from Dakar, Senegal (In Africa), when the race, the Dakar Rally, was originally ran from Paris to Dakar. It's now held in South America, yet retains the legacy name.

These are specially built off road vehicles, Kamaz is the manufacturer in this example. Like many races, there are different classes of trucks that compete in the Rally, alongside dirt bikes, quads and cars.

It's basically Mad Max and I encourage folks to check out highlights of it, or the similar Baja 1000 race.

Interestingly, the truck class includes support trucks that don't actually compete, but assist competitors stranded in the middle of nowhere.

This Red Bull sponsored Monster (energy drinks!) has right around 1000hp and a 265 gallon fuel tank if I recall correctly. Road trip!

Is Dakar the name of the model (type) of the truck?

Hockey Presenter Draws Penis on Live TV

MilkmanDan says...

Aha! This is pretty recent, and I've seen the actual play that is being, uh, highlighted.

The Colorado Avalanche (COL, white jerseys) are dead last in the NHL this season, and it isn't even close. They are beyond terrible. I'm a fan, but this season is so grim that I can't bring myself to watch games; just catch up once in a while on a week or two's worth of bad news. I saw this play came up just a few days ago.

In the play in question here (can't see much of it in the video, I'll embed below) a Colorado player gets a breakaway. Scoring a goal wouldn't do anything dramatic like get them back in the game, or save the season or anything. But it might save some pride and make it actually appear like they are professional hockey players. Hell, I think Avs fans would have been happy if he just hopelessly shot the puck right into the logo on the goalie's chest. Going through the motions would be an improvement for this team.

Instead, he inexplicably decides to stop, turn around, and attempt to pass to his teammate a few strides back. But the pass is intercepted by a defenseman from the other team, because OF COURSE it is. So they went from a guaranteed scoring chance (a breakaway shot) to nothing. Pretty much sums up their season, in one play.

Here it is:

Considering all that, I think the whole debacle was completely deserving of having a big dick drawn all over it.

Why Didn't Germans Just Go Around the Berlin Wall?

iaui says...

*promote

Very, very good explanation of the wall and the oppression in Berlin after WWII. I've been pondering recently why the German people, and specifically Berlin, are such world-leading bastions of liberal and progressive ideas and this is part of the reason.

The German people know what it is like to be both the oppressor and the acutely oppressed, so they seek to reduce that suffering wherever it is found, helping other nations' citizens seeking solace from the horrors of war.

It also highlights the folly of walls, and those who would seek to build them.
