How robots could end animal captivity in zoos & marine parks

newtboy says...

Huh!?
What's wrong with electric car racing? Electric race cars are already outperforming combustion engine vehicles in multiple arenas, just look at the current Pike's Peak record holder, or Nuremberg. Formula E is easily as exciting as F1. Extreme E races electric off road vehicles through the Amazon. Projekt E brings electric vehicles to top tier rally racing, there are many electric rally series. Pure ETCR is a GT racing series.

Do you miss the noise, or the smell? The racing is actually more exciting thanks to 100% torque at all speeds.

Sort of like electric car racing. Meh.

On the other hand, a ZOO is an artificial spectacle anyway so making it more artificial is probably acceptable for the future.

ENZED UIM 2016 Jetsprint WORLDS ACTION

newtboy says...

Good question. I can’t find it in the posted rules, but if it’s like rally racing only the navigator would get to see it beforehand.
I’m fairly certain there’s not a practice round, so round 1 would be the drivers first look at the day’s course.

Do the drivers get to review the current race map beforehand or is it a complete unknown? How much and what kind of prep does each team get regarding the current course?

ENZED UIM 2016 Jetsprint WORLDS ACTION

newtboy says...

Actually it varies every event. The co-driver has a map of the route through the channels and waives his hand in front of the driver, pointing the way as they go....it’s a bit like rally racing but too loud to speak the directions so they point.

So, at 3:40---what precisely is the course? It's not an oval, it's not a figure 8--what is it?

When Driver And Co-Driver Don't Mesh

DataSchmuck says...

I've played a lot of Rally racing games. I feel like this is an accurate depiction of what my co-driver would be saying during my driving.

Never quit; never surrender...

newtboy says...

*promote the never surrender mentality of rally racing.
You can only be sure you've lost if you've quit.
The first off road race I ever saw was a short course race in the LA Coliseum, and the front runner completely lost a front wheel with 2 laps to go...and continued on to win the race. I was hooked from then on.

Isle of Man TT 2014 ~ Greatest Show on Earth Street Race

newtboy says...

I often feel the same way about off road racing, especially since so many spectators like to stand ON the course (just like they do in the Man TTs). The same goes for rally racing. I just can't understand how it's still allowed in today's 'safety conscious' world, but I'm sure glad it is.

ChaosEngine said:

The TT. Is a completely mental but awesome race. It would never, never be allowed if they proposed it today.

"Hey we want to have a race at nearly 200mph through narrow roads in a town with no safety barriers, cool?"

"Are you kidding?"

"Oh, we were also hoping to let the general public ride the course as fast as they like after the race too*. I suppose that's out of the question"

"Get out of my fucking office"

*this actually happens!

Fatal crash Daiton airshow

chingalera says...

With the pimp-Air show mishaps happen (plenty examples on the VS already) and human tragedy for human tragedy sake is always a loser in choggieland-

I'd like to think the snide description reflected your distaste for drama as spectacle though instead of a, "WHOA!! Did you see that shit?!" rally-race reaction...

Nascar flyby nearly pulls down woman!!

direpickle says...

Not quite as bad as the folks at... whatever you call those dumb races. Rally races? Where folks crowd around the outside edge of hairpin turns, with no protection at all. Durrrrr.

Mordhaus said:

Yeah, I would like to get that close to cars that crash a lot. I'm sure the small wall and strong chain-link fence would prevent them from devastating an entire swatch of the crowd.

Rally Driver Stops to Say Sorry

Xaielao says...

Rally racing is one of the coolest and most difficult forms of car racing in the world, that the guy stopped to apologize is awesome of the guy. The parents with their kid right on a tight corner were idiotic and lucky the kid wasn't hurt. Hopefully they learn their lesson and in future races stay away from such areas.
