Slavoj Zizek: PC is a more dangerous form of totalitarianism

ChaosEngine says...

There's a difference between public and private speech. If you're talking to someone you know, well, by definition you know them and you know where to draw the line. My friends throw all kinds of anti-Irish racist slurs at me that I would take serious offence at coming from someone else.

As for the idea that PC "hides" racism/sexism/homophobia, fantastic! The more it's hidden away, the less people are exposed to it, until it becomes more and more socially unacceptable to be a racist, sexist, homophobic asshole.

Again re the opera: first, it was Perth not Sydney, and second, I agree it's stupid. But it was the opera companies stupid decision to make. No-one forced them to do this.

Here's the importance point: PC is not censorship. Censorship is saying you CAN'T say this, PC is saying "maybe you SHOULDN'T".

Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences of speech. If someone says something racist or sexist or whatever, I have the right to express my opinion that they shouldn't have said those things. If that's PC, so be it.

I think I can see where he's coming from with this, and the more open forms of racism there is an honesty that does seem less insidious. Open racism, like a fire in your house is not something you want, but at least you can see the problem right away and begin to address it (get the fuck out of the house!). But that more subtle form of racism is more like radon gas, can't see it, can't smell it, but it's slowly killing your ass (I feel terrible, I think I'll lie down and take a nap).

In America I think we've been living under the delusion that racism is a thing of the past, especially after electing a black President, but then we see how most of the racism has simply gone underground. And so, all that outwardly PC behavior is just for show, you can change how people act on the outside, but they're still the same on the inside and quietly act on those impulses, the rot is still there.

His examples of dirty jokes weren't even really genuine racism, amongst certain groups (guys in particular) razzing, busting your balls and such is usually a sign of acceptance and sometimes it takes on racial or ethnic tones, but with no real malice.

The decision not to show Carmen at the Sydney Opera House sounds like a classic case of PC overreach, how does not showing Carmen actually serve the anti-smoking cause? Let's ask how many kids started smoking because they saw that scene in Carmen? It's an absolutely useless and pointless gesture.

Why Do Aussie Trucks Have Bullbars?

ChaosEngine says...

Meh, you really don't. It's tough and not very tasty. Crocodile OTOH is delicious.

And he's not kidding about driving at night. Years ago, I drove from Sydney to Perth. I was always told not to drive at night, but one day the engine overheated a few hours from the nearest town. Got it going again, but had to drive in the dark for a few hours. Was lucky to miss a large desert red kangaroo, but unfortunately hit a wallaby. Pretty gruesome trying to extract it from the bullbars.

Melbourne Siftup (with Dag): This Saturday! (Downunder Talk Post)

Melbourne Siftup (with Dag): This Saturday! (Downunder Talk Post)

The most blatant 'dive' at a boxing match I've ever seen.

NordlichReiter says...

The boxer who took the dive was found unfit to fight in Sydney by the New South Wales Combat Sports Authority.

On 21 July 2010 Briggs returned to the ring in Perth to take on Danny Green for the IBO cruiserweight title. Before the bout Green labelled Briggs "unprofessional" after the latter weighed in nearly 4kgs over the agreed-upon weight. The ensuing fight was seen as a "farce",[4] with Briggs collapsing after 29 seconds following an innocuous left jab by Green, his first in the fight, which appears to have at most brushed the top of Briggs' head. Briggs was subsequently booed out of the stadium by irate fans, and had to be protected by management from projected missiles being thrown at him. In a post-bout interview Green labelled Briggs a "less than canine" and claimed he would not be getting paid for the fight, while also apologising to fans who had paid to attend.[4] Speculation has arisen as to whether Briggs threw the fight, as online bookmaker Centrebet labelled the bout "highly, highly dubious" following a massive betting plunge shortly before the fight.[5] The fight had been due to be held in Sydney but was moved at the last minute after the New South Wales Combat Sports Authority refused to commission the bout claiming Briggs was "unfit" to fight.[6]

Boxing is known to cause damage to the sense of balance. I thought it was the left jab to the body, a late pain in the lower stomach that caused him to give up. He could have gotten up. This statement is in hopes that he was physically unfit for fighting.

According to the Article that @kymbos posted, he was knocked out while sparring two weeks prior to the fight. Who the hell get's knocked out whilst sparring. Unless they do some different sparring down under.

Paul Briggs came out looking good, but I think he was just spent mentally. His trainers should have never let him fight.

Edit: This fight looks like shit.

Adilson Kindleman crashes in Red Bull Air Race

schmawy says...

"Brazil’s Adilson Kindlemann wanted to reassure his fans and supporters on Thursday that he was feeling fine and not seriously hurt after his MXS-R crashed at low altitude into the Swan River in Perth during a training session ahead of the weekend’s Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

Kindlemann also wanted to thank the emergency rescue crews that quickly helped him after his plane impacted the water with his wings level and tail first. Kindlemann, who was treated for a minor whiplash injury, said he hoped to be out of Royal Perth Hospital in time to watch Friday’s training sessions. He also said he appreciated the support from other Red Bull Air Race pilots."

Rockapella - Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

HaricotVert says...

Well she sneaks around the world from Kiev to Carolina,
She's a sticky-fingered filcher from Berlin down to Belize,
She'll take you for a ride on a slow boat to China,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

Steal their Seoul in South Korea, make Antarctica cry Uncle,
From the Red Sea to Greenland they'll be singing the blues,
Well they never Arkansas her steal the Mekong from the jungle,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

She go from Nashville to Norway, Bonaire to Zimbabwe,
Chicago to Czechoslovakia and back!

Well she'll ransack Pakistan and run a scam in Scandinavia,
Then she'll stick 'em up Down Under and go pick-pocket Perth,
She put the Miss in misdemeanor when she stole the beans from Lima,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
Oh tell me where in the world is... Oh tell me where can she be?

Ooh, Botswana to Thailand, Milan via Amsterdam,
Mali to Bali, Ohio, Oahu...!

Well she glides around the globe and she'll flimflam every nation,
She's a double-dealing diva with a taste for thievery,
Her itinerary's loaded up with moving violations,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

Pendulum - Slam (drum n bass)

mt256 says...

I love the campiness of dnb videos. this one is quite funny and includes Pendulum at the end (coming out of store). This track actually made it into the UK Singles chart it was so popular!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendulum_%28drum_and_bass_group%29

Pendulum is a drum and bass/breaks group from Perth, Australia. In 2003, the group relocated to the United Kingdom. They have no affiliation with the late 1990s Melbourne based electronic group of the same name who released the album 3 Knocks.

The group is comprised of Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen and Paul Harding. In 2005 they released their debut album, Hold Your Colour. Critically, the album was well-received in both the United Kingdom and Australia. In addition, it was one of the biggest selling Drum and bass releases of all time. Pendulum have also collaborated with The Freestylers, releasing the single Fasten Your Seatbelt. MC Spyda and Tenor Fly also feature as vocalists on Tarantula. They are currently signed to the Breakbeat Kaos Records label.

The Pendulum sound is typically heavy beats accompanied by low, buzzing basslines, overlaid with epic synthesized leads. They've produced various remixes of other artists, the most well-known being their remix of "Voodoo People" by The Prodigy.

"Slam" is still their biggest hit to date, peaking at #34 in the UK Singles Chart after receiving substantial airplay from BBC Radio 1.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I saw Rod Stewart and his hot GF in a hotel lobby in Perth.

I wanted to go up and talk to him, but he gave me this look like "talk to me and I'll rip your head off and sing Maggie May down your neck".
