Lethal Injections: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

00Scud00 says...

Watched a video made by Exit International, the lady demonstrating the use of the kit did it with the demeanor of an airline stewardess demonstrating the safety features on an airplane. Pretty surreal.

That's crazy. Anyone selling one that's used for it's designed purpose would be guilty of assisting suicide both criminally and civilly. Besides, who needs a kit to get a plastic bag, rubber band, and short hose?

That said, two tanks does seem like overkill in that situation....but then again, why be frugal at that point? If I was going to gas myself, I would rather use acetylene....go out with a bang!

I just now saw this. My yahoo email account sometimes disappears things on me. I lost another email about the same time.

I absolutely agree with everything you say. Biology is biology. There are differences. Sex is in the workplace, of course, and women bring it there.

I can agree with all these things, and still be creeped out by the indulgence, the wallowing, of only hiring very attractive women.

There is a long history of that in America, and it was creepy then, too. Stewardesses and what they were subjected to in the workplace is a great example. They would lose their -- THEIR WORK -- if they gained five pounds, is an example of really inappropriate use of a woman's appearance as a job qualification. These people are responsible for the safety of the passengers if a tragedy strikes. I love reading stories about how women are heroes and professional when an accident happens.

A shooting range is not a strip club. Wanting to be surrounded by women in your business who COULD work in a strip club is creepy.

Creepy really isn't the right word. It is shorthand for a complex interplay of gender roles and abuses and complicity that is endemic in our culture. I just like the way it feels in my mouth -- I found that Japanese word for it that perfectly explains my pleasure in using it. I am still pleased to know that word exists.

Gitaigo: Onomatopoeia that describes states of being, not sounds.

Creepy perfectly feels like my state of being around this video.

We are all biological beings who like to look at pretty people. Tall men make more money. Attractive people of both genders make more money. We will never be free from those responses.

But lets keep it unconscious, shall we? Let us work to be better human beings than people who reduce ourselves to walking genitalia looking for constant stimulation.

The rest of your points... yeah. I'm right with you. I am not someone who criticizes men for "looking." I find myself looking and I'm pretty firmly on the hetero side of things.

It came up the other day on a hike through the woods. A woman passed me wearing some sort of body hugging stretch pants. There was natural jiggling from her movements, which caught my eye. I found myself staring, I became aware of how perfectly proportioned she was, and how the rest of her was lovely in every aspect (I had seen her a few moments before, walking in a different direction.) I almost called out to my friends -- my god, that is the most beautiful woman. All triggered by a chance glance at an objectively beautiful rear-end.

Biology. It happens. I have no problem with it.

And those shooting range owners want to stimulate that reaction in the workplace, 100% of the time. And that, my friend, is creepy.

Asmo said:

I was responding to your comments, as I understood them, and if I got the wrong impression, I apologise. But I think it's somewhat blinkered to say that it's men that bring sex in to the workplace. eg. Most of the young ladies that work in the same building as me wear short skirts or tight pants, lots of decolletage on display etc. That is absolutely their right as long as they meet the dress code of their employer, but it certainly brings sex appeal firmly in to the limelight.

Unfortunately, while men are seen as rather simple creatures biologically when it comes to sex, there is more than meets the eye. The science certainly isn't conclusive, but there is a lot of evidence pointing to desire being a function of the amygdala, which is strongly stimulated by visuals in men. The following article is a pop news summary of a longer (and fairly dry) study which I couldn't find an non-subscription version of, which compares brain activity in response to viewing porn images for both men and women.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/16/health/in-sex-brain-studies-show-la-difference-still-holds.html

Women still get aroused by the images, but the desire that is evoked in the male amygdala is not replicated in the female. Hence men tend to respond far better to objectification than women do. There are other results with further delve the difference between male and female sexuality, and it's not surprising that society as a whole has been molded by our biology.

Probably also explains, at least somewhat, why men (myself included) find it hard to accept criticism for something that comes naturally to most of us. Few men would go to a public place with the express purpose of leering at attractive women, but almost all men (at least the straight ones) will find themselves gazing for longer than perhaps polite at certain women that catch our eye. That is not to take away from the fact that we are generally in charge of our actions, but it certainly adds an imperative that is less about being creepy and more about our biology.

Woman threatens to 'kill everyone on this plane'

C-note says...

I was on a flight where a woman acted out like this in first class. After slapping a stewardess a marshal pinned her down then they duct taped her to the seat. Strange enough when things calmed down the marshal held a glass of wine and allowed her to sip it down and she slept for the last 3 hours of the flight.

No wires or greenscreen, but there is a little editing right? Please tell me there's a little editing because otherwise how long did this take? I guess if there's 21 flights it must have had cuts or edits... or was that practice?

Did the stewardess spinning circle looked a little edited in? It's so good, i want to see the making of now!

They forgot these:

- Cabin service so frosty it makes a Moscow winter look like fucking Maui. (See: Icelandair)

- Fist-swinging free-for-all trying to grab aisle seats near the front of the plane (See: Southwest).

- The prepaid-for seat shuffle where the seat you reserved three months ago gets taken from you and you're reassigned somewhere near the head at the back of the plane. (See: Alaska Airlines)

- "Aww, Sweetie, did you want a sandwich on this 7-hour trans-Atlantic flight? THAT'LL BE 30 FUCKING EUROS PLEASE. Oh, you want to pay in dollars? Ok, that'll be 45 bucks at the current exchange rate plus conversion and transaction fees. Here, enjoy this three-day-old reindeer meat sammich that's dryer than the twats of the frigid cabin crew who served it to you." (See: Icelandair (again))

- Ladies and Gentlemen, we apologize for the 6g maneuver our former Air Force pilot is about to pull in order to avoid having to do a go-around because we were too busy discussing the new stewardess' tits to watch the glide path. Please keep the screaming in terror to a minimum as he startles easily . . ." (See: Delta)

- "Ladies and Gentlemen, we've now arrived in Scranton . . . oh, fuck, this isn't Pittsburgh!" (See: Delta (multiple times))

Yeah -- I just LOVE flying.

They forgot the bit where everyone has oversized carry-ons and take up all the overhead space, so the stewardess puts your bag in a spot 10 rows behind you, and then when you're trying to deplane you have to move against the flow of traffic to reclaim your carry-on.

How do you know if your dog is Cuban?

Shepppard says...

Funny story. My sister and her boyfriend went down to cuba for a week long vacation at one of their resorts. The resort was kind of a bust, but they met a dog along the beach that was scavenging crab shells and whatnot, anything she could eat. So, after it was there on the second day, they decided to smuggle her into their room.

For the week, they fed and took care of the dog, named it Lucy, and decided they wanted to take her back with them. So, they tried to add the dog to the cargo list for their plane, but found they couldn't because she hadn't had her shots.

They then found a lady who takes care of a lot of stray dogs to take care of Lucy until they could come back down and get her. Turns out, the lady was also friends with a Vet who could spay her and give her the shots she needed while she was there.

So, a week goes by, and my sister flies back down to Cuba to get Lucy. The return flight was the day after she got there, so the lady taking care of Lucy allowed my sister to stay for the night. She gave my sister a room and put Lucy in it, and a second little puppy that needed to be separated from the rest named Tommy.

All night, all Tommy wanted to do was play with my sister and Lucy, and was heartbroken when she took Lucy to the airport the next day. Turns out, the weather was too hot for animals to be in the cargo bay that day, and they wouldn't allow my sister to take Lucy that day. The lady taking care of Lucy said "I'll get you your dog, but only if you promise to take Tommy too"

My sister agreed, and reluctantly got on the plane, once again sans dog.

Half a month goes by, and finally we hear from this lady saying that a stewardess on Air Canada agreed to take the dogs with her to Montreal for free.

Long story short, my sister now has two Cuban dogs.

I'm in the same boat as @hpqp. I also really don't get IVF. If you really want a child and you can't conceive, why not adopt?
My wife and I did go through fertility treatments (and yes, that and a hefty dose of chance contributed to the outcome of triplets), but only hormone injections and IUI. However, we had decided that if it came down to trying IVF, we were going to adopt. That said, I can see why some might choose that route. We wanted a child who was ours biologically, and we decided how far we were willing to go for that outcome.

Thanks for the sentiment, but I'll say I have a peace about it. I know that it's likely to be the most challenging years of my life, and I can't say I'm not anxious, but it is what it is. We almost certainly couldn't handle it by ourselves, and we're thankful that we won't have to. Our friends and families are there for us, and we're so grateful to them for it.

Wife is currently pregnant with triplets. (Watching and learning about their development has certainly influenced my opinion on abortion, which may provide some perspective on a few of my recent posts.)
