Your Brain on LSD and Acid

shagen454 says...

Yeah, it's been a while for me too. The best one I remember was living off Valencia street in the Mission district of San Francisco. I dropped, went to sleep for a hour and woke up and the floors literally had mist flowing through the apartment like some sort of ethereal fantasy movie. When I went outside the fence was waving/bending in a mesmerizing way and the houses were continually sinking into the ground. I looked at some flowers and they were infinitely growing. The best part was looking in the mirror, it was like one of those youtube videos where someone takes a photo of them-self every day for a year - every second it was like a different photo of myself except very organic watching myself grow old, bald and with a beard and then back to normal, lol. It was fun, but I'd never do it again without some anti-anxiety pills around for the last 6 hours which I found to be fairly annoying. Plus, as Shpongle puts it "LSD? Do DMT." Ah yes! My bad, sorry. voted. It's the reddit effect, aka voting apathy, aka I forgot to vote.

But no upvote? (Not that I mind, I was just curious)

OK, this style of dance is so awesome. There was a very VERY talented dancer on stage when I saw Shpongle live at Rainbow Serpent Festival in Australia that must have had really similar training to these guys. I love this stuff. Almost makes me want to go to dance lessons.

Nice to see Shpongle and Infected Mushroom on your list, dsjunkid, hadn't listened to them IN YEARS, literally! And Saint Germain is nothing to be ashamed of, even with their popularity.

So here's my 10 cent:
1. Bear McCreary - Something Dark Is Coming (BSG Season 2)
Dark ambient. One of the best tracks from _the_ best TV series soundtrack ever created, I shit you not. We're off to a great start; McCreary is exactly what I hoped to see on my list.

2. Joke Society - Morphing Morning
From Cafe Del Mar SunSand. Yes, I confess guilty as charged, I'm one of the Cafe Del Mar obsessed.

3. Faithless - We Come One

4. Awake On A Train - Múm
Their 2000 "Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK" is one of the best albums in the world, period. This masterpiece of theirs is even better than Sigur Ros (they're both icelandic). We're doing a lot better than I expected.

5. Obstacle 1 - Interpol
Again, "Turn On The Bright Lights" was one hell of an album. Thank you, people that helped me sift some of their stuff. This is indie rock at its best.

6. Ace Of Spades - Motörhead

7. Evergreen (Dusted Remix) - Faithless
From Hed Kandi's Winter Chill 3, this is one of my favorite lounge/chillout tracks of all time. Excellent mix, too, a lot better than original, which is definitely saying something.

8. Jumbo - Underworld

9. All Along The Watchtower - Bear McCreary (BSG Season 3)
Best modern cover of this masterpiece. A tune of harps and sitar pave the way for a surprisingly powerful progressive guitar. I strongly suggest you google/youtube it.

10. Knights of Cydonia - Muse

Well, I must say, I never expected this to turn out as well as it did. Thank you, trusty shuffle, I may now actually use more of you in the future. And thanks for starting this experiment, dft

Well, I don't have an MP3 player, so I just loaded up my entire collection in winamp and hit randomize playlist. Here's what I came up with:

1. Beatsystem - Endlessly Downward

This is exactly what it sounds like. It is a 3 minute track of a repeating loop of tones that sound like they are going downward, endlessly. It is kind of a auditory version of barbershop pole.

2. Transwave - The Rezwalker (London Live Remix)

The first of several classic goa trance tracks that ended up here. I do have a fair collection of old goa on here, I suppose, but they are unfairly represented in this list, which is just fine. I love this music.

3. Finski Disco - Speaking in Lungs

Now this is really really weird stuff. Finland psytrance is some of the most interesting music I've heard in years.

4. Acrid Abeyance - 303 Delight

Classic, screaming, hard acid techno music. 303 delight, indeed.

5. Pleiadians - Alcyone

Another classic goa track. Alcyone is the name of a star in the pleadian star cluster.

6. Cause 4 Concern - Research

Drum and bass.

7. St. Germain - Montego Bay Spleen

This is the closest thing to an embarassment on my list. OK, it's almost mainstream jazzy house music. It's cool though.

8. Chris Watson - Adult Cheetah resting by the Baobob tree.

An actual recording of a Cheetah, purring as it rests by a tree. If you turn it up loud, it sounds crazy- almost like you're in a cheetah's mouth!

9. Shpongle - Periscopes of Consciousness
10. Infected Mushroom - Semi Nice

These should be self-explanatory.

Wow, did I ever luck in. What a great list!

Bloc Party - Banquet - Giant Hands video

djsunkid says...

No way, I have no problem being a fan of a band. I'm not really a fan of any contemporary rock bands, that I can think of, but I've been a huge fan of bands in the past, most notably Queensryche, but also Zeppelin, and Hendrix, although they were before my time.

I just meant that I wasn't a fan of those bands in particular. I enjoy a few tracks by Bloc Party and Coldplay, but I couldn't name a member of either band, don't know their albums, etc etc.

I am a HUGE fan of Simon Posford, aka Hallucinogen aka one half of Shpongle. I am a big fan of Shift, a trance producer from South Africa. I'm a HUGE fan of Robert Rich, and I wish that there were better robert rich videos to sift. No, I'm definitely a fanboi, just not for Bloc Party or Coldplay.

why are you against being a fan of bands? you said like the exact same disclaimer before that bloc party video. is because you're a dj? and dj's can't get attached to bands?

Culture Club #1 - Essential Music (Sift Talk Post)

djsunkid says...

agree with farhad, on the difficulty, and for the most part on the groups he chose. That's why I tried to go for essentials rather than favourites... as for my desert island picks..

portishead
j.s. bach
astral projection
shpongle
richie hawtin

come to mind right away.... i don't know... more thought required....

Culture Club #1 - Essential Music (Sift Talk Post)

djsunkid says...

OK, are you looking for essential listening, or my favourites? How about essentials, stuff that maybe you don't listen to every day, but everybody should at least hear a few times for reference. Music that can come in handy at the cocktail party, so you can get an idea about what people are talking about.

1 Shpongle - the greatest psychedelic group of all time. (or: Mystery of the Yeti, Taruna)
2 Lee "Scratch" Perry - the original dub master (or: King Tubby)
3 DJ Philippe - The original and one of the greatest Acid House producers (or: Frankie Knuckles)
4 Ozric Tentacles - What has happened to psychedelic rock since pink floyd
5 Jesse Dangerously - my friend, and the smartest rapper around
6 Merzbow - When somebody says they've heard the loudest music in the world and they aren't talking about merzbow, they need to STFU
7 Discordance Axis - When somebody says they've heard the fastest metal in the world and they aren't talking about Discordance Axis, they need to STFU
8 Robert Rich - One of the greatest ambient artists around, beautiful, melancholy, ethereal stuff (or: Alio Die, Steve Roach)
9 Kraftwerk - What can i say, the fathers of electro, techno, industrial... the ones that started everything...
10 Congo Natty - The original junglist. "Amen Brother" broken and chopped to bits, with ridiculous ragga toasting, and bass (or: Roni Size, Dillinja, Dead Dread)

Yeah, certainly not a complete list, but a good start. At least be familiar with those and you'll be in good shape.

To be sure, I only really listen to Shpongle and Robert Rich on that list on a regular basis, but to me they all represent the most creative and groundbreaking artists I can think of on the top of my head.

Feature request: queue suggestions (Sift Talk Post)

djsunkid says...

No way- When I go on a video hunt, I keep text files of'em- a queue of videos to queue. Most of my published vids I got in probably two or three hardcore sifting sessions, where I'll watch dozens and dozens of CRAP videos to try and find each sifted one.

I don't think it would be something I'd be interested in. I'm jealous of my finds, and I think that others would agree. There is a certain level of cooperation to be found on VS, but some competition too. Farhad, for example, finds stuff (shpongle, what) that kicks my butt, but I think I've found a few that he digs too. We cooperate on some level, but we're also looking for the best vids for our own.

That leads to another interesting dichotomy. I'll be the first to admit- some of my sifts are pure "this will get lots of votes" - anything with richard dawkins, my penn&teller, etc. But then there are videos that I don't expect to even make it out of the queue, but I sift anyway- stuff that I feel is culturally significant, interesting , cool, or important for other reasons. Sometimes just videos that I find hilarious for my own reasons.
And so we have this dichotomy: On the one hand, anybody could post the daily show and get votes, but on the other, it's good to find quality content that would normally be missed.

To me, it is the mix of these elements that makes VideoSift strong- the "hot clips" that everybody on the internet has seen, along with the neglected super-cool "elite" gems that get passed over elsewhere.

So maybe you want to share your finds, but I'm keeping my hand close to my chest. They are my finds- and I'll sift them when my queue has room.

Peyote Visions

sometimes says...

As some of the other youtube commenters pointed out, that's ayahuasca. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayahuasca
The people are south american, not north-american southwest peoples. The snakes are constricters (i.e. jungle instead of desert rattlers), and all the other plants/animals are pretty much tropiucal/rainforest critters. Ayahuasca is D.M.T. in an orally active format, as it contains a MAO inhibitor which allows it to be ingested orally without being rapidly metabolized. in non ayahuasca forms, DMT is often smoked. It is a very powerful hallucinogen.

Essentially, dude got himself Shpongled.
