MyHouse.WAD - Inside Doom's Most Terrifying Mod

I played this without watching the video, and am glad I did. Really excellent mod, and the ways it fucks with you are quite ingenious!

The Way We Get Power Is About to Change Forever

MilkmanDan says...

No Netflix for me, and no luck on a quick search of torrents, but I'll keep my eye out for that show/series.

Many metrics to compare. Ecologically, that system sounds great for static locations with enough of an elevation gradient and reservoir areas to make it work. On the other hand it seems like the ecological damage done by constructing batteries, factories, and disposing of them is likely quite small compared to many other alternatives, particularly fossil fuels (which also have long-term scarcity concerns on top of plenty of other issues).

A major advantage of battery tech over hydro storage would be mobility. If the thing consuming energy doesn't sit in one place, hydro storage won't work. Another somewhat less significant advantage is the ability to install anywhere -- a battery farm recharged by mains and/or a solar/wind farm could be installed in places where hydro storage couldn't. And for one more item in favor of batteries, I'd wager that the land area footprint required for batteries is much smaller per kWH stored, although that might be wrong for extremely large reservoirs (ie. a hydroelectric dam, pretty much). But by the time you're getting to that large scale, the location requirements and ecological disruption are also much more extreme.

Anyway, I don't mean to pooh-pooh the idea of hydro storage -- it really does seem like a very good and ingenious idea where it would be applicable. But there's certainly room for improved battery tech, too. I don't think that we're going to get fully or even significantly weaned off of fossil fuels quite as fast as the video would have us hope for, either. Fossil fuels were the primary tool in our toolbox for a LONG time. And as the saying goes, since all we've had is that "hammer", we've started to think of everything as a nail.

There was a show, islands of the future, on Netflix now, that had a large scale demonstration and explanation of it, used to store wind energy and power an island.
Unfortunately, I don't know of a comparison with batteries with concrete numbers.
I think you hit the nail on the head with what you said about efficiency, but for large scale storage, it has to be better when you factor in the energy costs of making, replacing, and disposing batteries, even including the cost of replacing the turbines.
...and all that ignores the ecological issues, where ponds beat battery factories hands down.

Ants spray formic acid.

Chaucer says...

there's another video of a bird that uses these ants to clean itself of parasites. It literally agitates the ant and puts it under its wing. Pretty ingenious.

Marbles and Magnets

dannym3141 says...

In regards to it not being a single take/cut, to me the video looks like someone was experimenting with what they could do. It would cost a lot to buy enough of those little magnets to pull it off in one, and it looks low budget though i say that affectionately. Some of the stuff is absolutely ingenious.

How Dad Helps His Child Experience Downhill Mountain Biking

Asmo says...

Oh I'm not upset (at least not in the traditional "oh noes, someone disagrees with me" way= ), I feel sorry for you.

You see the same thing as the rest of us, but instead of marveling at the effort the dad did to give his kid a unique experience, or thinking about how cool it would be if something like that happened when you were that age, the only thing you see is that she is too close to the screen...

I don't blame you for your mindset, we all have our mental baggage, but I feel sorry that you are incapable of seeing the wonder of an ingenious way to give a child a fantastic thrill. It's sad.

NOX said:

You can call me an ass all you want, just don't take yourself too important. Your "punches" don't touch me the slightest. With "sad" I didn't mean myself but the fact that so many people are absolutely ignorant to the downsides of modern media.
I never wanted to say that I think there might be any physical dangers for the child coming from the screen, my thoughts were more in the direction LiquidAvatar mentioned.
And please excuse me if I apparently failed to explain what I meant without ambiguity, English isn't my native language.
I just wrote what I think about it and I'm well aware that my view on this matter won't find a majority. That doesn't make me automatically wrong though.
I'm very sorry I apparently upset some of you guys, but hey, that's the internet, right?

He has amazing control over his face, but the camera work is also really impressive. Moving the phone closer to 'zoom' is ingenious and he kept it perfectly framed while doing that. Nice.

Camel Flings Man by the Head

Lawdeedaw says...

And so should every video of animals devouring animals--but those get a pass somehow... I saw a video of a rat hiding from a cat in an ingenious manner, but the rat eventually was smelled out and grabbed and eaten. Broke my heart actually. Like damn it gave its all. But then I never cried for censorship, although I won't watch it again.

Edit added,

@hallen

Or wait, did you incorrectly think this video was condoning or making light of animal abuse? If so what on earth gave you that misinterpretation? If the people are just abusing it for religion or such shit I say I wish it broke the man's neck. But if it was for a legitimate reason (ie., an injury, food, etc.,) then that is unknown. Either way, the video was merely about the POWER of animals, not abuse.

It should banned.

Engineer Guy: NERF Blaster

It's great how even something relatively pointless (in the grand scheme of things) like a foam dart gun can incorporate not only ingenious engineering, but also efficient and appropriate engineering (ie. robust enough to deal with kids who are breaking machines =)

Texas cop busts a pool party picking on the black teens

dannym3141 jokingly says...

This is the most vague, passive aggressive shite that i've ever had the misfortune to read.

"Too many people" are now being "taught" to disobey cops. How many people is just the right amount of people to be taught to disobey cops? How the hell is someone "taught" to disobey cops? Are there schools opening? Can you specify anything, or shall we just wave our hands and say "well if people are getting killed by cops, obviously people are educated in how to disobey a cop and therefore deserves to die"? Shall we do the hand waving? Yeah? Yeah, it's much easier to vaguely insinuate around something without having to pin yourself down to anything in particular - cos something specific could be disputed.

But golly gee willickers criminy sir, i sure don't mean to paint you as an excuse maker for the murderous uniformed psychopaths just because you make excuses on just about every single sift about it. Unlike you guys who like to paint us as cop-haters just because SOME of our posts on SOME sifts are disparaging towards the police.

And @bobknight33 - are you serious bro? Do you work for the police PR department or something? You should! Do what i say or keep getting slammed to the ground. You can rely on that tactic to create a functioning and safe society... right after the mass uprising and civil war ends. It scares me that people exist in this world who are so short sighted and arrogant..... and callous.. all at the same time.. I feel like you really do believe that "forever slamming into the ground" the dissenters, the people whose crime is DISAGREEING with your law, is an ingenious plan. Surely you can't think that, and you must be trolling at least a little. People might have gone soft these days, but if you make them scared for their safety then they'll react like the wild animals we inherited our survival instincts from. That's just making yourself the enemy of a much, much larger group of people - the people you're meant to be keeping safe from harm. You can't think this.. unless you actually want a fascist occupying force controlling people.
